Since all the Snow - Strange Smell
« on: 15 January 2010, 14:17:04 »

I have started noticed a burning sort of smell after a short or long drive since all the snow etc. To me it smells like brakes or clutch, like its just been driven like a loon.

Now its an auto so i'm assuming the clutch isnt like a manual one but I don't know, I was worried that I had maybe done some damage as I have been getting stuck in the snow quite allot and the TC and 3rd Gear snow mode has been getting quite a battering. Can this cause problems? Or is it more likely to be the brakes for some reason? They feel fine but could they be binding due to the temperatures?

Cheers

I was greeted by a burning smell just before the aux belt tensioner expired. Probably the smell of the belt slipping, only takes a sec to check the condition of the aux belt and eliminate it.

Well its practically a new belt thats on, I know it doesn't rule it out completely but I should of mentioned earlier that when I opened the bonnet there wasn't a smell there really, much worse coming from either under the car or front wheel arch which is why I assumed brakes.

I had the same problem....seems to have filtered away now.

Confinced myself it was something to do with the TC, the slipping of tyres and mis-firing as the computer dropped a couple of cyliners in order to help the car get grip.

Glad to see its not just me then, maybe there isn't anything wrong. I hope your right.  :y

Its just that it was the same on my work today and apart from getting out of my street the roads are ok, so couldn't explain why it still smelt.  :-/

Sounds daft but also Check your exhaust for melted plastic bags/objects. My daily had the same thing last week and it was a polythene covered bit of cardboard stuck to the exhaust, someone must have used it to unstick themselves from the snow and i drove over it  ::)

Possible I suppose, I'd be more enclined to say its brakes binding but now I know others are experiencing the same I just don't know.

Someone on OOF recently posted re this - to do with salt mixture burning on cats.  Have to say noticed it with both ours - both have newish aux belts and tensioners.  Belt and all pulleys not unduly hot after a run but smell definately stronger down by both front wheels.

Will try & find other post when i get home.
