Service + timing belt @ 80,000 going to £500 +

i enquired at a local garage and they said to do a service and a timing belt change will be about £500 plus vat!! is that right ?

depends what service your having, seems a little expensive, possibly 500pounds including vat maybe nearer the mark, parts I would have thought a max of 200-230 rest would be labour.

am really worried about the t belt going as it went on my last car and cost thousands. still seems a tad expensive to me, i was expecting a service to about £150 plus £100 for a timing change

Genuine GM timing belt kit is about £125=00 plus msot garages would charge 4 hours to replace,so I don,t think your quoted price is expensive for a garage,but it is very expensive if you could do it yourself..follow the guide or buy the DVD from the OOF Shop and then see if you could do it.
If you are at 80K and need the belt done.GET IT DONE SOONER THAN LATER.

Get the cam belt changed NOW mate! it must be changed every 40k miles or 4 years whichever comes sooner without fail!!!

A service at my local gargae costs me around £150 and the replacing the timing belt cost £160

the really key thing here is not what the cost is but that the person that does the work knows exactly what they are doing and uses the right tools.  Many garages will say they can do the work but behind the scenes will botch it by not using the correct locking/timing tool.  Using this tool and using it accurately is an absoulute must. 

I had my first belt change done at the dealer: they did a good job - no complaints BUT they were not spot on with cam 3,4.  When I did it, I really fettled the timing on 3,4 and it runs better

so don't focus so much on cost but on whether the garage knows what they are doing: ask to see their locking kit.  As them to explain the procedure for timing bank 1,2 to 3,4 - if they do not give a competant response - walk

If it did its still due one now...
 I think the 4 year replacement is a bit harsh though. I wouldnt replace the belt kit after 4years  if the car had only done say 15000 in that time

I do not know about that Andy, but to be honest, whichever car I buy, I go ahead changing the thing just to have peace at mind  :P even though previous owner says he changed it
