Small Water Loss ! Is it possible ?
« on: 18 March 2010, 10:28:14 »

Is it possible to loose a small amount of water if the
cam gaskets are failing. I've certainly got oil leaks which are being dealt with tomorrow BUT i'm also loosing a little water/coolant also. A little being about half a litre every fortnight.

The oil sitting on top of the sump DOES look rather "watered down".

No mayo on dipstick or anything horrible in the expansion tank.

Nope, no water is in the cam area, water is used for cooling.

How much are you loosing? Could be weaping oil cover plate, pin hole leak in the rad or weaping HBV.

Feel around the back for the HBV see if that feels damp, as thats the most likely cause of coolant loss....

I'll have a fumble.  Will get Mr Mechanic to take a look tomorrow also. Apart from what I see as "watered down oil" I don't have a visable leak anywhere.

Thank you.

Ok !  I've fumbled and the HBV is as dry as a bone.

As mentioned, I loose very little, about half a litre every 2 weeks. RAD seems fine BUT I'm 99% sure that there is water, not a lot, stuck on top of the sump, mixing with leaking oil from the cam gaskets.

Mine is currently losing a little water occasionally...seems a twig has lodged in the aircon radiator and it leaks when at a certain angle on the curb!! Which is not really an issue as I normally park on my driveway lol :y

check the pipes into the heater matrix are ok, also take the black cover off that runs length of the top of the rad, check the main hose from there to the engine is ok, and not leaking. The pipe off the rad is plastic and are known to split if butchered....

Water is denser than engine oil, so if there's any in the sump it should be at the bottom, not the top.

If you loosen the sump plug, and collect the first bit that comes out in a clear glass jar, you can see whether it looks more like coolant or just oil.  :)

Had a similar issue a few weeks ago with similar level of coolant loss. Try running the engine to operating temp, then leaving a tray under the engine as it may be a leak that's only apparent when the coolant is heated and under pressure. In my example it was a split rad pipe that only leaked when hot or when pressing on the pipe.

I've had a small coolant loss for well over 12 months and can i find it can i **** had in the garage to see if they could find and they car'nt. I'm gonna be ordering some u.v dye from the u.s if you car'nt find it let me know and i can order you one at the same time if you like you just have to get hold of a u.v light.  Was thinking about putting some kits together and putting them in the sale section but not syure if there are that many peeps that would want one?
Hope you get it sorted and i will be keeping my eye on this thread and trying the places peeps say myself. ;D ;D ;D :y :y

I discovered that my miggy looses from reservoir cap (old cap) when engine is hot, by pressure and evaporization.. (and I accidentally discovered that by listening the noises ;D)
