auto query
« on: 20 March 2010, 20:10:48 »

Hi
I have a 2001 2.2 auto - the car/spanner light comes up intermittantly. When its lit the car doesn't move/creep forward as normal and I have to really push down on the accelerator to get it to move. Car runs perfectly ok when the light is not showing. Can anyone give me an idea to the reason please?  :-?

Whatever is causing the EML (engine management light) to come on is dropping the gearbox into limp home mode. You need to get the codes read to find out the root cause. Where abouts are you? There are members all over the country with code readers :y

I would be interested in the result of the test also, I have been battling with my miggy's issue over the last few weeks - this being one as well. Im over in Ireland, have no idea where I might get access to a code reader.

The car's setting off in 3rd, manually selct 1 & 2 as you would in  a manual.

As a small "matter of interest" .. if in "limp mode"  you can select position 2 as much as you like .. but you won't ever get 2nd gear !!

That's not what my box did when I forgot my throttle position sensor. D would give 3rd, & manually I could select 1 & 2 I certainly couldn't get the car into 4th
The auto's use a 3 speed auto with an electrically operated 4 gear bolted to the side, ie it's not that dissimilar to the auto box found in an early 3 speed auto Senator A or Monza

If you read that link .. you will see that when in limp mode, position 2 gives 3rd gear, position 3 gives 4th gear .. and position 4 stays in 4 ... so it will FEEL like you've changed gear .. but not to the one you think !!!
