Noisey V6 engine
« on: 11 April 2010, 08:53:11 »

Hi All

Just wondering if anyone could help? I have a 1999 3.0 MV6 which has just started making a noise from the engine. This noise is present at start up and when warm but only up to 3000 rpm and is accompanied with vibration. There is also a lack of performance as well.

The noise is low in pitch, almost a knockand  it does not get any worse under heavy load. It is more noticeable from inside the car more than under the bonnet but I cannot pinpoint exactly where it is coming from.

So far I have changed the oil and checked the timing belt just to see if it had slipped a tooth but all was fine. I have checked all the alternator aircon and steering pump bearings all that was apparent was a little end play in the water pump.

It would be much appreciated if any one could help, even if it is just to eliminate certain factors.

Hello,If you feel you need to totaly clear all auxillarys, just warm up engine slightly, then remove auxillary belt. Could be your tensioner. Hope you find it I know the feeling very well  :y :y

I am concerned that it it is something more serious but have little experiance more major engine problems so do not know what they sound like.

Thanks Mark

Anyone tell me the best way to check this and what do I look for. I have fitted vectra rocker covers on it so haven't got any issues with poping them off.

Thanks I will try that but I did use Wynns engine flush when I changed the oil.

Also if there is anything else I can check before I dump the timming belt covers and plenum back on.

Thanks in advance, all your help is appreciated especialy as the Misses is making noises about changing cars >:( do wynns have something for that :)

engine flush is never a good idea in the v6 . It gets stuck in the oil cooler and thins your new oil . Try giving it another oil change followed by Wynns lifter treatment that should sort it out for you :y :y

Hi All

Thank's all for your suggestions I have now added the Wynns lifter treatment and run it for a week, this appears not have not improved the problem even a little bit, just less tappity in the mornings.

Also dropped off the auxilary belt and no luck there either.

Had a chat with a guy at work and he had a listen, now after interigation (of me not the car) he extracted that I had used injector cleaner a couple days before this started ::) so his theory is that I blocked an injector. He has ruled out plugs leads  and dis pack for reasons to long to mention. My question is if anyone can help, how do I test which one I have blocked and is there any possibility of repair/unblocking.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

It has been confirmed that the problem is a misfire but not what is causing it.
Didn't think to do the paper clip test originally as there was no engine light on but it appears that I do have fault 19 RPM incorrect crank sensor. Could this be the cause of my trouble or just an old code in the memory.

Thanks in advance

Thanks Mark

Just thought to add this missfire is not as bad as losing one pot all together, it is like it's running on 5 1/2 if you pull the leads off one by one it dose not seem to make much differance hope this helps
