Hi,
While investigating the source of a coolant leak from the back of the engine area, i pulled the front HT lead off to find it covered in oil(3.0 mini facelift). Does this indicate a cam cover gasket failure? or something else?

yes. 
I've just done the very same thing. Just about finished my cam belt from Saturday ... we were out all day yesterday - Honest!  and thought I'd pull no 1 plug lead to have a look    Wet through with oil. So was no 3 but not as much

Oil in plug wells is a sign of rocker gasket.
an easy way to get the oil out of the plug wells is to use a syringe, the type for refilling your ink cartrige on the printer are good.
you will need to put a straw on the front ie from a wd40 can fits great,  its an easy way to get the oil out and saves a bit of money.

Think you found 2 of the most common problems on the omega 

1 the starship enterprise failure (HBV)
2 cam cover gasket failure

but you're in the right place, check maintence guides

I used a Cif trigger-spray thing, put the tube right down into the well, and squirted it into a Pot Noodle tub...      After eating the Pot Noodle of course...

I hope it was beef & tomato, with heinz ketchup. not that awful sachet stuff

Small shryinge does the trick then use vx rocker gaskets

Yup Geniune Vx gaskets only, black sealant, and torque covers to 8Nm and will last a long time!

Pattern ones are rubbish

and probably be good to clean the breathers at the same time

As Henry suggests...it would be good to clean the breathers as well otherwise it's just false economy and likely to be blowing the gaskets again with resultant oil leakage.
