3.2 rough idle

A member has a (pretty rapid) 3.2 that runs fine, except at idle.

A few seconds after dropping to idle, it starts to miss badly, then throws 1/3/5 cyl misfires (P0301, P0303, P0305, P0300).

Initial reaction was that the lamdas were incorrectly connected (car does have history of a fair amount of work being done on it), possibly crossed between banks. Proved to be connected correctly by unplugging 3 of the 4 in turn, whilst watching live data.

Not tested myself, but compression alledgedly good on 1/3/5, 2/4/6 not checked.  Coil pack also replaced with known good one.


Car is absolutely find above about 1000rpm, and owner says fine on cold start.


Worth taking a punt, and replacing front lamdas?  :-/

has 1,3,5 wiring to coil pac been checked? or are we beyond that now? although would think symptoms would be more random than is evident....

1/3/5 coil pack is known good removed from another 3.2 which had no engine issues.

Should also say, although my V6 locking kit is on loan, we did visually check cambelt timing, and it looked pretty good, so think we can rule that out - if it is out, its not by enough to make it idle as badly as it does....

Think it's worth trying another dis-pack on that bank and checking the wiring to that pack.

Coil Pack already swapped with another car. Fault stayed with car, not coil pack.  Wiring, yes, thought about that, but it runs so well above idle.

jumplead from battery to the lifting eye that side makes no difference, so ruled out earths....

Who's to say that one hasn't got a problem even if it's new?

Had a similar problem with a cavalier, the insulator ceramic was cracked.
