front door solenoid failure
« on: 27 May 2010, 18:52:15 »

In OOf's members opinions, if the drivers solenoid has failed completely after working intermitantly for a day, is it likely to be knackered or is there a glimmer of hope that it may need cleaning and lubing!
stuck at inlaws for a few days and have the time to strip the door down, but if it needs replacing don't know anyone near here that has a trade club card, or infact where a local dealer is

Think I read here recently that the door 'solenoid' is actually a motor, worth cleaning and lubing in my opinion  :y

I will be coming up M1 to Derby but as much as I would be happy to stop by the wife would not! >:(
She laughs at me for my dedication to fixing the car up but as I have pointed out if we had followed a garages opinion our lovely car would be on the scrap heap, but after the run down here to kent 200 miles at 75mph the car has proved itself after all the work and tweeking as we managed a 34mpg average highest so far in last 3 years, first time that we have arrived with more than half a tank of petrol! :)

well chuffed 8-)

Having striped one down a couple of weeks ago i am pretty sure it is the micro switches at the end of travel of the worm drive linked to the motor that fail or go ' intermitant' The motor itself was absolutely  fine.  Didn't really do anything to it but when I put it back it worked fine  ................................................ for 2 weeks then failed again . Have now got a replacement from the scrap yard ..so its a chance how long it will last .  We really ought to source replacement switches , they would only cost pence and replacement didn't look too tricky  hmmm  can I be bothered ?

I know the feeling I would think the replacing the whole unit with a second hand one is cheapest easiest option

Pete will you be coming to the June ABS/OOF meet at the Plank? I can do it then if you are ;) If you don't mind I'll have your old one and look into the microswitch options, see if I can't get a repair service going ;) :y

Maybe this is not appropriate to your actual fault, but a few years ago I had a Senator that had drivers door locking problems. It turned out to be a broken wire between door and door pillar.
My Omega has this locking fault now, and whilst delving into the dreaded retaining arm ripping out syndrome, when manipulating the wires, the locking suddenly worked.  :) I suspect a broken wire  again.!!!
Just food for thought :y

Right on the money :y

I suspect the grease gets into them or something.

If going to the trouble of taking the door card off, etc. I would have a known good motor to hand just in case.

Might as well clean up the lock mechanism and re-lube it with some white grease while it's out but, IME, it's not normally a stiff mechanism that causes the problem.

I have a failed motor that I've been meaning to dissect. I recall a member was able to source a replacement microswitch from Maplin which fitted with a bit of modification. Going back a year or two now.
