Can you mix green and red coolant?
« on: 26 May 2010, 19:15:47 »

Hi can you mix green and red coolant, ie normal and longlife? I have loads of red, and the car with green coolant needs a very small top up! Typical.

according to the vauxhall red bottle, it does mix.

personally I prefer to keep to the same, so why not flush the other one out, should be changed every couple of years anyway  :y

I just don't like buying coolant every week, spent a lot of money on it this year through various problems on the 2.5.

Don't care about colour right now, just cost! 3.0 has green coolant, I have red. And I'm skint!

It will mix if Vx antifreeze but, reduces the life to 2 years (as you would expect!)

A "small top-up" won't change the colour (with any luck).  Just make sure they are based on Ethylene Glycol or whatever.   ::)

considering poor coolant servicing is biggest cause of HG failure, for the minimal cost, flush it out and have a good mix of 50/50 with red  :y

its what (the early ones certainly) left the factory with.

the pink is just better quality and lasts longer.  I think its all vauxhall now supply as well.

Cheers muckers!

I will do the doo, if anything else is wrong I'll just book the coolant change in when I get the next round of bits sorted. I don't envisage it being long before I can afford to flush it

Qualiteh, I love this place  :y

Sorry to drop in on your topic Buddy without being invited but can i use 'blue' coolant to top up my overflow bottle?

Problem is that green or red just doesn't look good for my 'champagne metallic' colour mig whereas blue is sooo in this year  ::)

But on a serious note i bought 2ltrs of Asda 'Anti-Freeze & Summer Coolant' already mixed for a fiver & as i'm stuck for time & money i thought i'd top up with this as a temporary measure  :-/

@EOM - No fricken way do you have a champagne mig - I have TWO! After all that we have the same colour cars! LOL. Mint.

I think it should be ok but check Tunnies post about HG failure, definitely food for thought..

What a RIP OFF.

five quid for what is only actualy 1 litre of antifreeze concentrate....I bet even the local Merc dealer would be cheaper than that.
