Hi, I've got a '94 2.5 V6 Omega, complete with an occasional lumpy tick-over    I intend fitting the 1.6/1.8 EGR blanking plate, and a new gasket (have checked it is the right size), and wondered if
 
(a) I can unplug and remove the EGR assembly complete, or

(b) Refit the EGR assembly, without altering the solid blanking plate, or

(c) Drill a hole in the solid blanking plate to enable the valve in the EGR assembly to physically move (so as to provide feedback to the ECU).

I've checked the Common Issues/FAQ,s and Maintenance Guides and cannot find the answer - if I've missed it, then I apologise.

Many thanks in advance for any advice offered.

Just blank off the EGR, blank between EGR and Engine, leave it connected.  Everything is happy

Thanks for that - I've just fitted the EGR back with Blanking Plate and new gasket, tried it up the road, stopped then restarted it a couple of times, and engine tickover now dead on 500 rpm, no lumpiness, no EML.
Result is one very happy man, and I appreciate your help.

coke can burns through,....needs to be more substantial

Because it allows exhaust gases tinto the inlet.....on idle the power plant consumes very little air and fuel hence when you throw an inert gas in the mix it makes things very lumpy and uneven

..... and the idle speed is adjusted automatically to make up for the extra "air" thay you're using. If there's suddenly no "air", then the idle speed will change a bit.

I did this mod when i had my V6 vectra using the "5p" trick! Worked very well and more robust than a piece of coke can! It passed its mot like it too...happy days.

My friend can you explain what the "5p" trick is as I am across the Atlantic in Canada with the same engine (Ecotec V6 3.0L in a Cadillac Catera, a cousin of the facelift Omega) and have lumpy idle?  So at idle the air going to the engine will be only coming through the breather tubes with the throttle closed.  Is this correct?  Say the breather system is less than 100%, what will be the impact?

Just trying to understand not poking any holes as I may try to do the same thing.

Thanks pitchfork I will find a suitable coin.  You know how times change, when I was in England, I could put a penny in the gas meter and take a nice hot shower a while back 

For crying out loud, 5p to plug an EGR ... wow.

Any insights on the rest of the questions welcome.

Just to add, this was done on a 2.5 i dont no if they 3.0 are different. It made the car run lots better and smoother after the change though.

"Remove the rear plenum (Just prise the circlips apart with a screwdriver and re-use them afterwards). Unbolt the plenum mounting bracket and the manifold heatshield and prise the wiring harness away from the work area.

If you look down the back you will see the metal pipe, Snap the pipe off or undo using a 22mm open spanner and a hammer. Hit the spanner firmly to crack the nut and it will come free quite easily. No major rusting here as it gets so hot!

Cut the pipe to remove the 2 nuts and slap in some exhaust putty to completely cover the 5 pence pieces. I used two 5p's with plenty of paste on the manifold one.

Push some paste into the holes on the manifold and the egr valve and rebolt in place. You can now use a 22mm socket as the pipe is no longer in the way.

Refit all the bits and run the engine at idle speed for 20 minutes to harden the paste. Job done!
