3.0l v6 idle speed
« on: 23 June 2010, 17:49:40 »

what do yours sit at?

mine warm is only like 500/600,which isnt really a problem as it doesnt struggle but ive noticed that when parking and got the steering wheel on near full lock it does try to stall unless i give it a bit of the throttle

is there an idle screw adjustment?

No there is no idle screw. The only way the idle can be turned upis with a tech 2.

Tick over sounds fine around 500 rpm without air con on, 600 rpm with air con is a good guide.
When you turn your steering wheel at tick over you are putting extra load on which the revs may drop a little but should not stall.. does it go stiff at all? the steering I mean when turning at tick over? could be just the power steering pump getting tired and perhaps needs a change :y

I thought 500 was a little low for tickover when I first got my 3.0 Mv6, it does add to the smoothness though...

Pretty shoddy for an engine/car loaded with accessories specially the electric cooling fan in front and the cabin air blower.  The alternator is basically doing squat at 500 engine RPM based on Bosch performance curves.

I believe one of the drivers has been the fuel efficiency regulations and the ways to pass these to the point that some parts in the USA have set an idle tick value in this range.

Cheers.

PS:  I put a 1.7" pulley to replace the 2.21" standard bosch pulley with a suitably short serpentine (auxiliary drive belt) and my idle is a lot better. This ensure that the alternator is actually producing into the battery at 500 RPM.  May be placebo  ;)

Mine sits higher than that, 650-700 and around 850 with the aircon on sounds like mine needs to come down abit then  :-?

There is an adjustment to the idle just under the throttle bodies.

I have the same kind of problem when I have it on full lock it can die. I was reading somewhere about the ability to idle low for USA regs etc... and that the big nasty flywheel plays a part in this (think it was Courtney where I saw this) I have a f20 gearbox on with a lighter flywheel so im thinking it would be best my idle being adjusted up a touch?

NO NO NO NO NO!!!

That adjustment screw should be set to FULLY CLOSE the TBs. It should NOT be used to try to adjust idle!

The idle is/should be 100% controlled by the engine ECU, and it does this on 2.0/2.5/3.0 via the idle control valve, and electronic control of throttle on 2.2/2.6/3.2.  Manually messing with the throttle bodies will invariably bugger up your idle, making it lumpy and non responsive low down.

The idle on a v6 should be around 450 (A/C off) and 550 (A/C on). If the idle is not smooth, look for airleaks (including throttle body not fully closing, or egr sticking) and clean/lube ICV.

If the engine is slow to react to extra load at idle, ICV is a good start.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with the default idle speed if the engine is running properly. You have a fault somewhere which you are trying to blame on the idle speed. ;)

.. and the alternator should be charging OK at the idle speed too. Perhaps not the full 14.4 ish volts but should be well over 13, which is plenty. The engine spends most of its' time at 2K rpm or more when driving anyway.

Mine has always been at 650-700 and around 850 with the aircon on and i've always thought it was too high as it makes the back sit down when you go from P to R or D and it also tries to drive off while your waiting at traffic lights unless you put it in N and then when you go back to D it makes the back sit down, not good for the box is it.

It won't do the box any harm. Automatics do tend to "creep" but this is only because a little torque is transmitted through the torque converter at idle. A TC will never fully "disengage".

Even with the aircon off it still makes the back sit down, not so bad but still makes it sit down none the less but very pronounced with the aircon on so maybe it would be better to get the idle speed lowered a bit anyway.

Its an ex armed response vehicle and the idle speed has always been higher than any other Omega i have driven.

i'll jump in...i have idle issue,too...
engine runs fine.
the only problem is idle...it idles at 450 without aircon, but it is quite rough, like it misses a beat regularly.
it is not fuel injection issue, because it is same on lpg and petrol. also, new leads and plugs.

does ERG have any influence on idle running?
i have cleaned ICV actuator with WD40. it helped a bit, but not much.
