Running Hot Issue
« on: 06 July 2010, 20:19:47 »

Ok, my 3.0 MV6 Auto (99) has still not got over its heating issue. If anything it is getting worse.

At first I always had a small water leak down the passenger side front. Thought this was due to the hose from thermostat to rad as this looked a bit perished. Replaced this when I replaced stat due to the engine running hot on hot days (around 100 mark). Was ok for a day or two then it started leaking much worse :(

Stripped hoses and flushed rad at weekend and water was running freely through the rad, so I thought no blockage there. Just to make it clear I ran water through all pipes and also into engine just to make sure there wasnt a blockage there and everything appeared ok. Rebuild and fans came on at just over 75 when climate was swithced off and then 78 when climate on. This was ok for a day and leak was much better, however after a day there she is back to creeping towards the 100 mark again and when I popped the bonnet on arrival home after 7 miles there is water all around the top hose, radiator and auxillary pump.

Anyone got any idead what could be causing this, if the rad was flowing free why would it not when engine running. Also why would water escape from the top hose??

Mine has never run this hot until recently, even during the really hot weather last year. It does appear to creep up when pushing it and will go past the 100 mark which worries me a little.

Just out of interest, have you had the real figures checked with Live Data?

Mine over-reads by about 4 Degrees so I'm not overly concerned about it as I know it's not as hot as it appears ;)

No I havent, but was really concerns me is the water being forced from the top hose when under pressure. Im not begining to wonder if there is a crack in the rad  :'( that or is there an issue with the engine building up to much pressure  :-? :-/

IIRCC the plastic bit where the top hose connects is well known to start leaking after time :-/

Take the rad out and remove the rubber hoses. Lie it flat and fill it with a small bottle of Fernox from B&Q and top it up with boiling water, leave it over night and then get the garden hose and flush it well. If you've got a pressure washer, wash it from the back. Oh and don't get the Fernox on the grass though ::)

I have dismantled several cars with seized electric water pumps. The impeller gets clogged with rusty residue from the coolant, also the recess in which it sits goes rusty at the back. The electrical part also appears burned out, one of them with a melted plug.

This may be relevant to your car?

During the hot weather my N-reg 3.0 Elite estate has been getting perilously close to 100 degrees and over at times, so I'm going to check the electric pump asap.
