Climate control is doing weird things ....

First start of the day always works perfectly, hot or cold as requested.

Subsequent starts intermittently only cold. Once it's in "cold" mode, then it will not run hot at all until an overnight "rest"

Disconnect vac pipe from HBV and it instantly will give heat.

With engine running "reset" - OFF + AUTO - does absolutely nothing

With engine NOT running, but ignition switched ON, reset does "something" about 1 in 4 times ...but the "something" is NOT all the directional valves cycling and the fan running ... it is the sound of a motor running under load then a single "beep"

I'm starting to think I need a new Climate Control Unit ... unless anyone knows better .......

Thanks for that .. any idea where to look for guidance on TIS ?? 

From your "hint" I'm guessing perhaps there is a solenoid that should control the vac to the HBV and isn't ??

The bit in Haynes 3.13 looks suspicously like the old 2.5 MFL stuff .. and I have no idea how relevant it is to FL .. and no mention of solenoids behind the glove box ...

Get a vacuum gauge on the HBV line and verify it can be controlled by the solenoid, I'd say. If that works OK, I'd say the climate panel is getting into a funny state, perhaps due to a faulty temperature or sun sensor?

I assume it works properly when it does work? Not a blending flap lever disconnected?

Yup ... end of last winter it started doing similar. HBV replaced and it "seemed" OK .. but heat not been used through the summer TBH

Absolutely perfect, maintains temp very well. If it works it's good, if it doesn't .. just cold...

The solenoids are pretty obvious with the glovebox out.

I'd do simple tests, like seeing if there is always a vac to solenoid, and then that the solenoid can control the vac back to HBV

Vac system  -----> Solenoid  -------> HBV
                              ^
ECC ECU --------------

Its a pretty simple setup when you break it down to its components

If you can't be bothered don't have time, simply pop off the vac pipe to HBV - that will always allow heat through matrix, which shouldn't be too much of an issue this time of year (obviously, plug the vac to stop vac leak).

Also, IIRC, the recirc flap is vac operated via a different solenoid...  ...not sure if there is scope to swap the solenoids over to test...

IIRC, Solenoids are just to right of fan blower motor.  The brown components in shot of The Golden Nugget below

Solenoids are interchangeable. Black vac rubber pipes = hbv
black/blue rubber = recirc flap

As I don't use recirc at all .... is it worth just swapping the two over Does the recirc use vac as default or no-vac as default ?? If you get my meaning !! (what happens if you put a knackered solenoid on the recirc ??)

Not sure about non-working solenoid on the re-circ as the facelifts utilise an air quality sensor which controls it automatically but if you never use it I can`t see any problems arising just make sure that the flap (behind pollen filter) remains in an open position.
If the solenoid is fubared I`ve got two here + F/L dash sun sensor (black)
