Covering number plates?
« on: 14 January 2008, 03:30:06 »

I just wanted to ask why people are always so very careful to cover up number plates, when posting up pics of their car?

I hear many comments that it is to stop cloning of number plates.

Is it not a little bit too much though? I'm not sure how much it really helps. Eg, if I wanted to clone a number plate, I'm sure it wouldn't take me long to walk around Tesco car park to find a particular type of car... Especailly if it's common as muck like an Omega/Vectra  ::)

I've got to say I agree James. It seems to have started on the BBC and has then filtered down to every type of media.

As you say, it wouldn't take much to pop down to Asda car park to find a car to clone, although I suppose it's safer to clone a car that is many miles away rather than one that is on your doorstep.

Actually its probably better to clone a car thats with in the same county as opposed one thats miles away, only say that as i was pulled several times when i had my XR4x4 sierra due to living in Huntingdon and the car being registered up north....police thought it suspicious it being so far from home. ;D

I cant say i see it as such a big problem

on adverts, i just ring the seller for the reg details for insurance quotes if i'm interested in a car, but in general, not displaying the number plate doesn't "hide" anything unless the owner purposely refuses to disclose it upon a genuine request, after all, its their car

i suppose the reverse is that displaying it doesnt really put anyone at any risk, but a number plate registers a car to a person, and therefore i think people subconsciously class it as "personal details" and censor it by habit, which is pretty much why i do it

I guess in these litigeous days the BBC are worried that someone'll have their number plate shown on TV and then sue the broadcaster when someone clones it.

As opposed to someone just seeing it in Tesco's car park and cloning it anyway. (Actually, I guess you'd sue Tesco then ::) )

I think that covering up your Number Plate on the Internet
is more to do with personal security than anything else.

There are some really strange people on the Internet, and
your address can be traced from your number plate.

Folk give out all sort of personal details on BB's ie. finance,
possessions, when on holiday and the house is empty etc..

I've even read of a bust up on a BB, and two men traced the
address of one poster, went round, and beat him up.  :(

So be careful what you say on BB's and watch that temper
when 'chatting'. You never know what kind of psychopath
is on the other side of your screen.

I hate to agree......but i do.......

The DVLA will give out personal details very easily to 3rd parties or nutters wanting to know where you live!!

Isn't it supposed be harder these days to clone a number plate? Especially when you need to take your Log book MOT certificate and some form of ID to proove that you own the car and proove who you are?
