My 2.2cdx estate  has been playing up for a while very poor starting from cold. I have changed lambda sensors, cam sensor and a full service has been done. Still the problem persists. In a final attempt to solve this problem i have been told to change the ecu  not willing to purchase  from new so second hand is my option is it easy to swap any is it just a case of one out one in with no hassle? PLEASE HELP.......

no codes present can only assume ecu. Doyou know if this model has  a cold start sensor and if so where is it.

friend of a friend has had a tech 2 hand unit on car first of all it came up with lambda fault changed both then cam sensor changed that and did full service inc fuel filter . Now the word is ecu but not from tech 2 from friend of a friend (is he a friend)

I think I can only recall one genuine ECU failure on a  2.2 and that was an ignition driver. They very rarely fail.

Plenty of other faults can be present without raising a code.

Check the usual things first:

Oil / water in plug wells?
Throttle body and breathers clean?
Engine getting up to temperature properly? Thermostat OK?
Engine temperature correctly reported in live data from the engine ECU?
MAF sensor reading normally? (10-12kg/h at hot idle)


What are the symptoms? Is the engine turning over at normal speed?Does it just take a while to fire? Does it run normally after it's started? Does "flood clear" help? (turn it over with foot flat on accelerator to clear a flooded engine).

Highley unlikely to be the ECU.

When you say cold start problems, what happens when it does start?

When the cam sensor was changed, was it changed by a Vx dealer or an independant garage.

If the latter, it probably won't be a genuine cam sensor.

2.2's tend to suffer from starting problems if the cam sensor is failing, or a non genuine sensor has been fitted.

The ONLY WAY TO ENSURE A GENUINE has been fitted, is to buy one from a Vx dealer, or have one fitted by a Vx dealer.

cam sensor is GM fitted by myself following guide from this forum. When started car  seems to be missing, putting foot to the floor revs just die and engine cuts out rev counter needle sticks and jumps to higher revs not a smooth sweep of the needle.

If you find yourself near Saltney, I dont mind putting the "My Naff Code Reader" on and see if anything jumps out.

Have you had a look at the dis pack under the Ecostrip?

Any oil/water in the plug wells?

What does the coolant temp sensor for the engine ECU read when cold? How does this compare to the reading sent to the instrument panel from it's sensor?
