Mix Up of Problems
« on: 03 December 2010, 18:09:13 »

Last week i replaced all the anitifreeze as i had a week mix from flushing my heater matrix out, all was good for a couple of days.  Over the last few days iv noticed that when the engine is hot on 3 occasions that when the engine is hot i only get heating when its on max, turning to a specific temp makes it blow cold, temp goes down when accelerating and up when braking and when i stop to investigate i notice a lovely little puddle of coolant underneath.  i have no oil in water or vice versa.  The worst was this morning just before the end of a 40 min journey but didnt do it yesterday when the engine was running for the best part of 4 hours or so around town.  I think i may have had too much water in the system and not bled it properly as a little while ago got it hot and opened the tank and let it do what it wanted until the was no more air.  Could this have been my problem? Or could it just be the tip of the iceberg???  All help and experiences wanted

Thanks Marc

(p.s. Sorry about the essay and hope it all makes sense)

If you had overfilled the cooling system the coolant would find it's own way out as it expands, hopefully through the cap on the expansion bottle.

If the two heater pipes entering the cabin through the bulkhead are getting hot and you still don't get hot air from the heater then you have an air lock in the heater matrix (unusual)or it is partially blocked. (Will need flushing.)

Having assumed you have repelled all air after the refill ,and the lost of coolant is not from the obvious places(header tank, radiator drain,or the HBV )maybe a vacuum hose, most likely top of HBV as this regulates the heating. ;)

i have got rid of all the air now i think (fingers crossed) i drove to and from work today 50miles and no probs, water was at the correct cold level when i left work and still had water in the expansion tank before topping up.  The climate worked a treat up until this week and still wasnt working right tonight even though has been reset several times, but atleast i have hot air, Im really not sure where the leak was coming from as i couldnt get underneath the car in the snow i had but if there is still have a small leak it will be on my to-do list

Mark, are you sure the 'small leak' isn't just condensation from the Air Conditioning? :-/

Best thing you can do Marke is start a new thread for yourself, your's is a different problem and will only create confusion.   :y

my air con doesnt work and have eco on. iv now done 75 miles since burping properly and have lost about 90% of what wagon the expansion tank and when I get to home or work there is a slow drip of water off the sump and can see steam coming from bottom of engine. im guessing a good look underneath and some proper investigation is in order. also my temp normally sits steady at 85 but be seems to drop to 80 then rise back up to 85 for no reason, any ideas on this or is it linked with the leak? thank you :-)

Check the HBV, also the hose from the hbv to coolant bridge as this can be chafting and leaks as the system pressurises :y

first chance get ill be straight underneath it to get to the bottom of this, if the hbv is the culprit is there any harm in taking it out of the system? im assuming by doing thatch would only get hot from the blowers

i have been under the car and the hbv looks dry when its dripping water which seems to be faster now.  The leak i think if coming from the back of the engine on the drivers side dripping onto the top of the oil sump and cross member next to it, i cant see up the properly but thinking if radweld could solve the problem?  there is a pipe that comes out of the bottom of the rad and as it goes up towards the engine looks wet but cant see if this is the problem, any with some knowledge of the 2.0 have any ideas what could be the problem and as always all advice appreciated

On a second inspection i think its coming from the hoses at the back of the water pump but only leaks when the engine is very hot, not when cold left overnight or warming up

What ever ,don't put any sealing additives into the cooling system. These additives blocks the channels and causes more problems later. As your earlier post was flushing the system may have unblock a previous fault .I would favour the coolant bridge. :-/

Probably some hose is loose. When the engine is hot coolant is more presurized then when cold so it is not strange that it leaks aftter the engine is properly warmed up.
Just let it get hot and observe all the water hoses and tighten if necessary.
