Ive had a quick search on here regarding the correct oil type for an LSD. Instead of buying the GM diff oil and adding the correct additive specific to the LSD, can i just put generic LSD oil in it like this?

And before i put the diff on the car, are there any checks i can do to test it? I wouldnt want to fit it only to find i have to pull it out to rebuild it.

If the diff's out of the car I would remove the backplate and check it visually for wear. Also check the seals for signs of leakage. Might be wise just to change these before fitting as it's a lot easier on the bench.

Also check it hasn't got too much backlash.

Not sure about that oil, by the way. The normal recommendation is BOA90LS from Opie oils.

Yep, back plate is already off the car. Ive spun it round, and cant see any wear to the crown wheel or pinion, but thats all i can see as the clutch plates are still in the case. How do i go about checking backlash?

Yeah ill replace the output seals, as one is a bit wonky. Is Vauxhall the best place for these?

why would you risk a perfectly good lsd?? ppl are asking around about them and you risk yours with some noname oil. the genuine gm can't cost more than 20pounds on a trade card with aditive that is specific for this kind of lsd.

I dont have a trade card. The LSD additive was a bodge by vauxhall as it wasnt cost effective to stock specialist LSD diff oil after their original stuff ran out. So they supply standard GM diff oil of which you need .75 litres then you have to add their 'special' lsd additive .25 litres. This increases the viscocity of oil to make it work with the lsd clutch plates. So its actually Vauxhalls bodging and im thinking now it'd be better to just use quality after market stuff. Just found this out by reading up on the Carlton forum.

I've always used Castrol LSD oil and had no problems upto now (20+years)

Because you used an after market oil? or the GM blend?

there are ppl here who could help you buy with a trade card. all i was saying that it could be hurting it .. what i wouldn't give to have an lsd in my omega.. i'd say bye-bye to situations when i am stuck in the snow and balance it )

I use after market oil with GM addactive (cost only 5£ with out TC) work fine so far

BOA90LS is the current favourite oil for the LSD as covered in the diff oil change thread.
