Gearbox solenoid change
« on: 31 January 2011, 20:23:25 »

Hi all just gathering opinion as i have a faulty gearbox solenoid as title says, im of the thinkin stick a new gearbox in as its a diesel and donor box will be petrol theres the added job of changing bell housing but ill be having help from a friend and hes had advice its just s easy to change solenoid. Im thinking itll be cheaper and easier to change box as the replacement box is free. :y

If it's just a solenoid then changing it is just one step on from an ATF change, take the large sump off and the valve body is right there. But will need to ID the correct solenoid obviously. Which one is it? 2nd to 3rd seems common...?

But as you say the ar25 doesn't last long on the 2.5td. So if your going to change it make sure it's for an ar35 from a 3.0 or 3.2. Then you can chip it for more POWEEEEEEER! As JC would say.  :)

cheers chris its the 2nd to 3rd as ya say ive had "My Naff Code Reader" on it to check, the box has done 190,000 which surprises me and if its that easy am tempted to change solenoid as a stop gap as the box ive been offered is another ar25 and havent got the pennies for a ar35 for a while as i seem to be gettin a lot off niggles that need putting right on her at the moment! but once shes sorted am sure i can convince the wife i need a ar35 and chip ;D :y

make sure you replace the sump gasget aswell there not much, the solonoid is £86 so a pretty cheap fix. o and of course make sure you refill when your done.
A point to note that no doubt most will already know is, i read the codes on mine today and set the reader for Vauxhall and found nothing but when set it to opel it found what i was after! solenoid 2-3 fault.
