2.5td glowplug change
« on: 04 February 2011, 20:34:14 »

ive got a new set off plugs and after reading a couple off posts on here it looks like the easiest way to do it is to takethe inlet manifold off as it gives easier access. If i take the manifold off is there any seals or the like i will need to replace before refitting?

you will need 6 inlet manifold gaskets, if you dont get them you can bet the old ones will rip and leave you stranded with the car in bits, also new gaskets will seal better than the old ones and you wont get a boost leak when turbo kicks in,
good idea to have some gunk or jizer or a strong degreaser ready for when the inlet is of, as it willbe full of black oily gunk and the car will perform beter when this is cleaned out! :y

First Td I tried the manifold wouldn't come off 94. 2nd I got it off with a nail bar gaskets ripped, used hylomar 95. 3rd came off easily, had new gaskets but weren't needed 97. Plug tops tend to break!

Take your time and you should be okay bud. ;)
I sourced the manifold-to-head gaskets from our local BMW people. Cost a couple of quid for the six :y
Best to use reputable plugs, such as Beru or NGK (around 35 quid-ish for six) ;)

Don't force things when refitting the manifold. Gentle wiggle wiggle and it'll go on.
Watch you don't trap the wire on the sensor injector between the manifold and the block. (Been there ! ::))

Plug tops tend to break!

This is mainly a problem if you cant get the manifold off!!

Aye, or if some clot's previously 'dogged-up' the wiring terminals >:(

Ive got all parts and thougght id crack on with a few bits today, changed the wheel bearings  and i thought its time to crack on with getting the manifold off got everything undone and went to take the manifold off and its a tad stuck! Whats the best way to free it up as i dont want to be wedging things in or prising things and damaging anything!
Sorry to be a pain

first double check you have undone all nuts and removed, also all connections you can see i.e ppes etc, I usually give it a thump upwards to break the seal then its just a case of wriggling it out, however some have removed the scuttle for extra clearance, :y it is tight to come out but perseverance pays off
