* cos one of them disappeared into the bowels of the engine bay, never to be seen again.

Easiest way to do this is to simply undo the 2 10mm bolts holding the ABS/TC in place and gentle and carefully angle the whole unit up towards you giving quick and easy access to the 6 bolts holding the ABS/TC ECU in place...the brake pipes have a degree of flexibility that will allow this to happen, saves lots of time, stress and the skin on your knuckles!

This is the daddy when it comes to access to the ABS ECU screws, IMHO.

y'know.
I was looking at those 10mm bolts, and thinking that.
but then I thought "nah, someone would have added that to the maintenance guides if it worked"

I think I took some photos with a view to updating it when I did one. I wonder if I've still got them?

EDIT: Oh! Silly me. I did add an addendum to the guide.

update.
New(er) ABS ecu now fitted and working. 

tried loosening the 10mm bolts holding the ABS pump and tilting it back.
It wouldn't move.  and I bottled out of forcing it.
60mm Hex head socket bolts M4 thread
and a length of (aluminium     ) tube from B&Q to make spacers.

took about 10minutes to refit the ecu, not including the hour to size the spacers + bolts.

I bought a 10mm flexi ratchet spanner from b&q, and used the old bolts/screws for the top two fittings.

Started up, and I have no warning lights, and the speedo works (to 5mph, at least!)

I've had the car since september, and I've never actually been out on the road in it yet.

MOT wednesday. then I'm gonna burn about a £100 in petrol driving round Yorkshire
