Swapped the passenger seat yesterday. Disconnected batteries on both cars approx half hour before disconnecting seats. There was a yellow plug spare on the seat loom on my car which I plugged into the replacement seat (as there was a plug to plug it into on the seat) reconnected battery, started car - airbag light on. Disconnected the plug which had been spare, in case it was something to do with that - light still on.
Any ideas please ?
Is it a tech 1/ tech2 only job to turn it off, or can one of the lesser box of tricks do that ?

tech I or II will be best but you can use any code reader to clear air bag light

any decent code reader will clear the airbag light....once lit it stays lit even when the fault is gone, so once its on, pretty pointless trying to resolve till you have the diags gear handy.

If your device does live data, that should give you clues as to where to look.

I'd start by unplugging the seat. Once unplugged re connect each plug in turn, double checking that there is no crud in any of the connectors; the spare one might have collected all sorts of things. Also double check the locking tabs on the airbag/pretensioner connectors as these can be a bit tricky.

If all looks in order, take it for a spin to see if it clears itself. Somethings sort themselves out in this way, but I don't know if the airbag system is one of those things or not. :-/ NOT (must type faster  ).

If that doesn't sort it then I guess a trip to the witch doctor some tech2 time would be in order.

Got the drivers seat to swap over yet. Not sure whether to leave that until current problem is resolved or just put it in and then try to solve problem(s) later.
Any suggestions on which type of code reader might be worth buying to put the light out ? I could probably do with getting one anyway. Theres no-one within at least 60 miles of me with tech2. Although,typically, Serek was at my house the day before it happened.

Id do the drivers seat while your at it, theres already a fault so get both swapped, then you can cure, 1 or several faults at once when you get a code reader

Double check the passenger connections, then swap the drivers seat and see what happens. This way you'll only have to reset the system once. Still only typing with one finger

A thought has just flashed through my mind..(it's okay, i'm sitting down ).

While you're twirling spanners, swap the pre tensioners off your old seats on to the new ones, could even do the airbags as well, if the trim is the same colour. This would eliminate the possibility of failed components on the new seats.

I'd also double check the condition of the pre tensioner wiring around the seat frame, might have pinched a wire during the shifting about. :-/

Changing from grey cloth to black leather. Will look into those ideas though. Plenty there to find a possible cause, thanks.

Whats the betting that if from a facelift car, the donor seat has occupancy detectors fitted.....and the ecu was not expecting them

The wiring diagram in the book of lies is reasonably accurate. You should be able to cross reference the various wires with the car and the components.

The wiring colours in my late facelift match the ones in the book for minifacelift.

Yellow plug........two wires = childseat sensor and as your seats came from a late model Elite the passenger seat would have the sensor incorporated. Didn`t you notice the bloody great sticker by the seat control switch

The yellow plug with two wires is the one I mentioned earlier.
I have noticed the sticker, but not ever having the need to put a child seat in the car, didnt pay much attention to it.
I plugged the yellow plug in when I installed the seat but the light came on. I have tried unplugging it bit it doesnt make any difference.
Mark DTM said "the ecu wasnt expecting it". Does that mean if I turn the light off, the ecu will get used to it and the child seat sensor will function as it should ? :-/
