sounds like the alarm is going off....but someone has disconencted the horn

1st thing to check is a plunger under the bonnet (you can unplug to test)
and if an estate, that the rear window alarm sensors are connected

unplug it, and see if it solves the problem...

if it does, then you can reattach it, and bend it upwards for better contact.
then look at sorting the horns.

failing that , a few other places to look.
can even read the alarm log if your near a member with decent diag equipment and pinpoint it exactly

Alarm triggers can be caused by all manner of things including spiders in the passenger area.

The bonnet switch can be intermittent so will not trigger it every time.

Thi8s is what happened to me!
It turned out that the internal Alarm Sounder batteries were dead and the Alarm horn itself was seized and not working at all. The hazards, when the alarm activates flash for two minutes then stop.
You need to change the main alarm horn (the single one under the scuttle) if it has not just been disconnected - and if it has test it before changing it. Then disconnect the black square alarm sounder in the same place.
The alarm sounder tends to be disconnected by everyone anyway because the internal batteries (special ones) are not made anymore.

Has the car been standing unused for a while, Maria? Has it recently been jump-started?

I had exactly the same problem on mine shortly after buying it. Mine had been standing for a couple of months unused, and had required a jump-start to get it going pre-sale.

I checked all of the things mentioned above in an attempt to solve it, but nothing seemed awry, and nothing stopped it happening.

However.........the car now gets used daily.

The problem has gone away of its own accord - I've owned the car for 7 months, and it hasnt happened at all in the the last four.
Might be coincidental of course, but that was my experience, anyway.... ;)
