My car has developed what feels like a misfire. Its gone from being silky smooth to being quite shaky, especially under load. On tickover the rev needle flucutates.

I did a paperclip test and produced 12 and 19 (Incorrect RPM).

Does this code point me in a particular direction or is it just a matter of checking plugs, leads, fuel filter etc?

Failing crank sensor, needs changing asap

The crank sensor fits into the block near the oil filter canister. Held on by an easy to remove small bolt Torx 8 or similar. The sensor then just pulls out of the block.

The key thing is to route the wiring carefully away from oil and heat when you install the new one.

If you are lucky it will have the part number on the head of the sensor(oil filter end) If you are unlucky it will say "SAAB" like mine!

Is that all it can be?

The crank sensor is less than a year old (genuine Vauxhall Part) and has been re-routed as suggested in the maintenance guide.

Had the same fault/symptons on mine recently fella with code 19. Took the advice of the guys on the forum and bought a new one with the TC card (good discount) . Re-routed and runs like a dream now.

A 19 is something that shouldn't be ignored

as its under a year old.....try the guarantee route

I do have a TC, I got it last year and bought a crank sensor (among a few other things) It expires this month so my sensor must be less than a year old.

I didn't realise these things came with a 12 month guarantee?

Yes, Genuine VX parts, minimum 12 month as I understand it.

They may do it in several ways I beleive..
such as :

you buy a new one, and return the old, they send for testing, if faulty, you get your money back.

they charge for diag, if faulty, diag is free, and replacement part given.

either way, or another, try it 1st, youve nowt to loose 
however dont expect to drop an old one on the desk, and walk out with a new one without paying.

If it was me....id prob take the old part in, with its invoice, and say its faulty, id like it swapped under guarantee, see what they say

Had a new Vx crank sensor go in mine in around 2 months.  Car wouldn't start, code 19.  Replaced with new Vx and fired up straight away - swapped back to "old" new one - no start.

Took it back to Vx under warranty - they said would need to see car with it refitted and if faulty would replace foc - onus on me to get non-starting car transported to Vx dealer (some 15 miles) - no brainer - just fit new and put it down to experience!!

So much for sale of goods act!!

Just checked my invoice, crank sensor was bought on 23rd July last year.

My car is running, its just very rough, but I wouldn't want to drive it anywhere with a faulty crank sensor for obvious reasons, I've been there before. My stealer is about 10 miles away in Northampton.

I'll phone the stealer tomorrow and see what he says. I need a few other parts anyway. (HBV, Brake sensor, AntiFreeze etc etc etc)
