How is the Megane 225
« on: 31 January 2008, 19:58:30 »

General comments on the French and their cars aside, who has good or bad experiences with the Megane 225?  Specifically looking at the 5 door with cup chassis.

225bhp and FWD  :o ::)

i have not heard anything specific about these cars, but i could imagine that that sort of power would make to an interesting time when you floor the throttle

Then there's 350-450 FWD. Not this car, but I've seen it done. LSD!

can't comment on the 225, but the normal ones suck!

coil plugs constantly go, to change the front indicator bulbs you need to remove the front wheel!! to get access though the wheel arch lining.

Interior is plastically, cheap... loads of rattles and nocks.

This was in a 18 month old one!

Yeah, well anything nicer inside is ludicrously expensive!  This one's expensive enough.

Cheers. Yeah, I know what you and tunnie mean. I've sat in one but not ridden in/driven one. Everything's plasticy, or so expensive I want to cry. I wasn't going to spring for the Xenons. I hope it isn't too harsh, don't like seriously overdamped/high gas pressure suspensions.

If you want a FWD souped-up family wagon, I'd much rather go for the Focus ST or Leon Cupra R in that order. Or spend a little more for an Audi S3.

Personally I think the 225 is hideous looking, never been in one but I'd bet it's the usual cheap and nasty Renault fare. My mate has a Focus ST and the interior is much improved compared to the previous focus, and the Recaro seats are fantastic (he has an ST3 so leather seats). Feels very nice to drive and the 5-pot engine sounds much nicer than any I4 I've heard. Can't really comment on the handling as I never pushed it too hard -- don't want to risk pranging a brand new car on third party insurance!

Driven the Cupra R too, and while I prefer the Focus, it's quite a nice drive too, if a little bland.

If you want FWD and power, how about Saab 9-3 or 9-5 in 2.3 Aero form?

Go blinkin' quick, tuned quite easily to silly power, handle well (for fwd) and are reasonably priced.

Oh and they have superb seats, good trim levels and impressive sound systems.

I'm not looking for a FWD hot hatch, just something interesting that I can lease for an amount that won't give me a coronary. Focus, Leon, and A3/S3 are all bland. I'm not saying the Megane is pretty, but at least it looks different and has performance and leather for a slightly more palatable price. I'll check out the Saabs.

The Focus ST3 is 20% more than the Megane, that's significant but doesn't rule it out completely. The Saab is almost twice as much . . .

Yeah, I'm a big fan of 5cyl engines but there is always an effect on handling.
