Door check strap ?
« on: 08 August 2011, 14:39:03 »

Is this the infamous broken check strap thing that I can remember reading about on the forum.Looks like the metal has torn and the part that the strap attaches to has been bent back inside the door ?
If so, is it feasible to repair ?

This is as you say. If you use a reinforcing plate either side of the door skin ASAP you'll have an almost as good as new door. The metal had come away completely on my door, and the repair has lasted for a good number of years. The plates are easily made if you have access to material, but are only pennies to buy from the dealers.  :y

Any tips for bending the metal back to where it should be before trying to fit the reinforcing plates ? Looks like its going to be awkward. Very little access. :-/

Went to local VX dealer and the parts guy got a bloke from the body shop to come and speak to me.
In his opinion, the repair kit (as shown above) wouldnt be much use. It really needs the spot welds drilling out and that part of the door replaced with a bigger repair plate, which used to be available, but may not be available now
He thinks the smaler plates are ok for doors on smaller models but not  for an Omega door.
They didnt have any in stock anyway, so Im still stuck. :(

ignore him, many of us have totally knackered doors held together with these, they are fine, and dare I say it....stronger than original.

order from andyc.

use a screwdriver / chisell and gently tap flatish, then use the plates

one on Ljays car was damn near torn out - strong as you like now after fixing at Newent last year  :y

presume youve read

iirc speaker removal give some handy extra access to the back of it

the body shop bloke was half right in what he said. If your door had broken when the car was only a few years old with xxx miles (60k  :-/) then Vauxhall would have done the repair that he suggested. It involved removing the section shown in photo & plug welding the new panel in. I bought panel (a few quid), then realised exactly what the repair involved so didn't bother. The metal on my door had ripped out completely but has been OK with a sandwich using a repair kit for past number of years.  :y
