Hi all,

Decided to clean my breather system today (v6) I really should have waited and done the rocker cover gaskets at the same time as I have a small leak from the 246 side, but anyway...

After using copious amounts of carb cleaner an oil change was needed, not a problem I thought as I have been meaning to replace the oil + filter since I bought the car.

The filter however had different ideas. When turning the 'cap' to remove the old element, the whole thing started to rotate  - the removable cap is stuck fast.

Not wanting to damage anything I simply changed the oil leaving the old filter in place.

However, I have no Idea how long that filter has been there - I suspect at least 10k, maybe more, and perhaps longer if it also 'stuck' last time. The oil was fairly clear suggesting its been fairly well maintained, but even so.

Anyway, what are my options now? Can this be sorted relatively easily (+cheaply), do i need a new 'cup' bit, or am I now looking at a cartridge style mod?

Any ideas, suggestions and directions gratefully recieved

can be opened using a strap wrench on filter body, and socket on the head.

Will need removal to fix properly I beleive...So you may want to consider the mod at the same time.

Thought as much, that it'd need a new one....

Hmmm, may have to see if any of the forum experts will have a go at it, as Im not sure ive got the skill, knowhow, tools and/or patience for it, (+ Ive began a list of other jobs which need (read I'd like) doing).

It`s not a difficult job and a bit of patience is a bonus 
I bought one of THESE to hold the filter body, the fabric strap one that I had would start to slip whereas the serrations bite a bit giving you more grip. You might need a bit of force on the socket for the cap depending on how tight the numpty over tightened it. Once it`s off you can tighten the housing to the correct torque ( 45Nm IIRC ), change the filter and then refit the cap to 15NM as clearly stated on the cap.

If the base is spinning, doesn't that mean it is broken?

No it means the securing nut has come loose whilst trying to undo the cap.

I was assuming Gav meant in general. 

I've never had the base spin, but assume that once the cap is removed it's just a case of re-tightening the base & then you're OK

Afraid I think it's broken if it's spinning,there's a dog/tongue cast on the the base of the filter body that projects into the block as a key this must be snapped off to allow the body to spin,the fixing bolt only holds it to the block

That's what I thought I had read before
