OK - sad family-led requirement.

What size / type roofboxes have folks managed to fit on a mig saloon?

I am looking for a full width box as large as possible.

not a problem, need saloon specific roof bars, then any roof box you like...

100kg limit on the roof iirc, so too large is not beneficial.

mine is 320 litres, which is a good size.  I wouldnt want smaller, but feel much bigger wouldbe too heavy

Any size roof box should fit as it is clamped to the roof rack,just depends on how much you want to spend onit really,some places will even hire them out .....

just remember not to over load your roof bars, and try to keep all heavy item in the middle when packing and put lighter items aroud the outer sides. i took advice form thule, what thet dont konw about roof boxes etc, is not worth knowing! i use rails on estate so not needed to buy bars (had them for frontera). ours is a halfords 450/460L and have no problems with it. staff will try and sell you most expensive but just get size you need. Dont forget about your mpg and take box / bars off when finished with. this might be telling my grand mother to suck eggs but dont want you to fall foul to any problems.

I was mainly wondering what would reasonably fit by the time you set it far enough back to wit in the wind stream from the windscreen and so as not to hang too much over the rear.

I am avoiding asking the herberts in Halfrauds coz, as stated, they will try to sell the most expensive and generally would not have a clue / wouldnt trust them.

i would try thule on the phone and get the information from them, part numbers etc, and google for best prices. halfords do stock the stuff but at least you know what you want. last time i was at halfords there was a listings book, make, model so if you have part numbers you should have the upper hand. now and again there is one member of staff that knows what they are talking about! bit like finding some one in our local B&Q!

I have a saloon, and use a 320l (or is it 340) roofbox.

As JB says, the roof loading is the limit, although on the saloon, the roof bars are actually very close together (almost just each side of sunroof, so don't want it too long.

I use a Karrite one (Thule's cheapo brand), was around £120 from egay, delivered. Halfords are way too expensive. Fortunately, I was given some genuine GM roofbars.

I tend to put a couple of tables in (with little chairs that fit in tables), a couple of bigger chairs, then light stuff (bedding, sleeping bags etc) to keep weight down, and not have CoG too high.  It will happily cruise along at very illeal speeds, though obviously there is some wind noise.


I wouldn't want to go bigger, due to weight limits and the amount of rear overhang beyond the rear roof bar.  My box also overhangs the front.

Now the summer (?) is over several roofbars, boxes will appear on the bay of E .. I picked up the bars for £25 and a box for £30 and just 40 miles away a few years back ... might take a while to find the right stuff local .. but could be an idea ..

I fitted a halfords 340 and it did what I needed it to. It was surprising just how much I got into it.
The mountings dictate the length of the box cos the gutters (if it is for that type) only give a relatively short distance between the front and rear mounts. You also have to remember the total weight that is recomended by the maufacturer for the model of car otherwise it will become unstable.

A 420 litre bought abroad. As the summer has all but gone there should be bargains around. the distance betbeen the front and rear fastenings on the box should be adjustable so it will fit other cars.
