please help strange noise on front wheel
« on: 11 September 2011, 15:44:37 »

hi all

went for a drive today (first real one since the hgf and rad failure :-( )

anyway the car ran like a dream,no water loose, over heating nothing :-)

but i got a strange clunking/rattling noise from the front pass  wheel, was that worried i made the wife drive !!!!! (pmsl, but only so i could put my head out the window to lisen to the noise as it only happened on unlevel/cloble ground )

anyway thought it could only realy be a few things

1.  something loose
2.  brake retaining clips broke
3.  wheel bearing
4.  disk its self loose
5.  shock knackered

anyway had a quick look and got a bar to lever on all the joints etc ,nothing !!!!

brakes all fine and bolts tight

shock looks good ,no oil leaks etc and when bouncing the front of car all seems spot on and returns to correct height etc so well happy

BUT then i put my hands up on the spring on the shock :-(
and found this

the very bottom of the spring has snapped off  :o :o :o

not sure why or when this has happened but as you can see it most of spanned a while ago

any ideas why this would of happened???????????

do i need to replace it asap? now ive removed this the noise has stopped and the car still seems to drive, steer and brake just fine no pulling to that side etc

cheers

Your profile says you're in Germany, I can only assume that their roads are as bad as they here in Blighty! I'm afraid that broken springs are generally a result of wear & tear due to pot holes etc. You need to replace BOTH front spring sooner rather than later really. You now have odd springs which can result in un-even suspension movement which can cause imbalance of braking.

Not done an Omega's, but nothing other than the spring compressor for an Astra or Smart.
Don't go too cheap with the spring compressors though, Omega's springs are quite hefty.  :y :y

Easy enough job, but you will need a spring compressor. You may be able to borrow one  ::). Remember your can will need a full geometery set-up afterwards unless you are VERY lucky.  :y

Depending how old the Omega is its not uncommon trust me to have a spring randomly go the last of the vectras were splitting the springs like nothing in one week i changed over 5 springs on over 8 different Vectras!!! so its not uncommon. :-/
