Last year I made a temporary pit/ramp out of breeze blocks. It was great for changing the exhaust and other under the car tasks like ATF change.

I am intending changing my auto box later this year and might build a permanent structure, with foundations including filling the blocks with concrete. Practical considerations mean a depth of block of only 44 cm with a flat floor would be best.

Is that going to give sufficient clearance to get the box off and more importantly back on? How high is a gearbox when off the car?

firstly it depends on what type of box you have. when i did mine last month we used 15" axle stands which were good anything lower then this i would sugest that you wouldnt get the box out from under the car. the more space you can give yourself the better.

44cm between the wheels and the ground should be plenty.  At that height you will need a long floor jack or spacers that can reach high enough.
