Contact Cumbria Police direct.

I suspect its a scam from an ebayer...

Its got my full name including middle name.... not sure how fleabay would have got that?

Hang on... the police have access to the DVLA database.... so why do they need those 2 details? They should have those logged...

Not quite.. had similar problem, officer wanted me to produce MOT, insurance etc, I said you have the reg number, you can get these details off the DVLA... officer said that since I was not investigated for a suspected crime (some else hit my car), the data protection act prevented them from accessing my details on the DVLA database... so if the copper needs info from you but you are not a suspect, he has to ask you (nicely..) because he can't access national databases and look you up.

Looks like the case for me then? - They have a 'event' logged say speeding or ticket of some kind say in 2007 or early 2008.

I have taken it late January, after said event.... so they want to know when i bought it? And because i am not a suspect they cannot get the details from the DVLA?

Surely they already have your details. How else would they have contacted you?

I guess they are probably trying to establish who was the registered keeper at a certain date. Since it has changed hands there's some ambiguity to resolve.

Yes but if that registration number has popped up somewhere and needs to be traced, and the car is flagged as having changed hands recently they need to establish who the keeper was at a specific time. DVLA details won't identify this down to the day or hour. Could have passed through a dealer, etc. without the records having caught up.

You need to phone the guy and establish what is going on. Car has been on EBAY and had quite a high profile on here so it's not impossible that the plate has been cloned or something. :-/

Crikey, I nearly pooped myself when I read this thread!

Erm, the logbook was transferred directly from Max to you. (Who I recall said something about a ticket up north some while ago...)

If I can assist then do let me know... but I doubt it's me they're after  :-/

I'm gobsmacked....

I know why Cumbria wrote to ME.... LAST F'ing YEAR!  My first speeding ticket in 10+ years.

Why the f*** they're writing to Tunnie i have No bloody idea... but since my Speeding ticket was wayyyy   before the car died, or was fixed, or sold on, or whatever.... surely even muppet beaurocratic tosspots can work THAT out...   what they think they're doing is anyone's guess.

Pass it on to me Tunnie, and I'll go shove it up their sun no shiny.

Only just seen it now... sorry been all go here at work (at table football  ::))

I rang Cumbria Police today... explained when i bought it and who from.

They asked me to fax a copy of the V5 log book, which has the date of transfer on it.

I said i have the log book with the date (29th Jan) so the DVLA must have it, she said they might be a problem with DVLA, can you fax it it in  :-/

She said there was a speeding ticket to Max in November.

Ok i said no probs, i'll fax it Monday morning.... i gave them contact numbers and hung up.

10 mins later got a call from them saying they have found the correct DVLA records and that shows me as the keeper on the date i said, but they still want a copy of the log book  :-?

They said nothing is comming to me, as i did not have the car then, but it looks like Max you might be getting a ticket!  :(

They could have done it a different way, cause i shat me pants when i got that letter yesterday!

I would have said the Information is at the DVLA on the logsheet and you don't know the previous owners name and address.....

Tbh that would a bit fishy.... they would have said who did you buy it from then, if i said 'a mate' it would be like one of those chavs off road wars.

Honesty was the best policy i think.

Oh I fully agree mate...

Plus, it seems they already knew who max was based on previous correspondance...

Shame on the ticket though  :(

I'm still waiting to see if I get one!

I agree Tunnie, you have acted entirely 'properly': honesty is your friend; half truths or just reluctance presenting fact in such matters-legal can rebound and have serious consquences.
James, whilst I see your perspective; I`m of the opinion that there is no place for 'creative thinking' when the Police have you in their sights.  ;)

Purely as a scenario:

What if, I see an advert on a forum for a car for sale, and arrange to go and see it. I like it, and I buy it.

I fill out the logsheet, sign it, and HE returns it to DVLA.

I drive off, happy with my purchase, but genuinely don't remember his full name address, and I've not got it stored on an email etc.

I agree with your thoughts, I would do the same... but just to offer a twist....

In other words - we don't HAVE to make your life difficult, but we can so we will. Make sure it takes you 14 days to send it, just in case they're relying on it for Max's address. [smiley=evil.gif]
