ATF Dexron 3
« on: 28 September 2011, 16:39:54 »

Lots of different oil options on Opie website and general advise.

What is regarded as being the most cost effective ATF to buy for Dexron 3 spec. :y

Also is it necessary to buy 2 x 5ltr as have read the best you tend to be able to remove is around 5.5 ltrs,so seems pointless buying more than could be replaced.

I recently bought 2 x 5ltr bottles of Fuchs Titan 4000 Dexon 3 ATF from Opie Oils for just over £50.  Highly regarded on this website as good stuff.  I used 6ltrs when I changed my auto box fluid.  Don't know if Opie oils do a 1ltr bottle of Fuchs Titan, but I do know that if you mix the oil with another brand you would end up lowering the quality so not worth doing.

I have kept the remaining 4ltrs for topping up, power steering and use on other cars.

HTH  :)

Agreed. Titan 4000 is the one to get. :y

I used significantly more than 5.5 ltrs when changing mine. More like 7 or so. Buying 10 leaves you some for topping up.

Just a note. Power steering on omega is dex 2. Not 3.

In theory all dexron 3 spec oil should be the same spec no matter who makes it as it's a strict specification designated by GM.

Having said that, I can't bring myself to put that car plan "crap" in my gear box, and used Titan 4000 dex 3 as said. But it's probably the exact same stuff. Who knows...?

I found it cheaper elsewhere than quoted by opie. Shop around.

...and yes you will need more than 5.5 liters. If the level is low initially you'll get more in than came out. Ime 7.5ltr to top up after a couple of checks.

I understand that Dex 3 is just a better quality than Dex 2, and have been told that if you were to top up a Dex 2 fluid with Dex 3, it would be fine and dilute to such an extent it would be Dex 2 anyway, that not correct?  Thought it was a similar principle to brake fluid, i.e. DOT 4 is just "better" than DOT 3?

I also found Fuchs Titan cheaper on another website, and Opie Oils matched the price for me.  I would recommend them, very quick, no issues with postage or anything.

Cheers

no Dex 3, was listed as the replacement PAS fluid....till they realised it caused leaks!  stick to Dex 2 for PAS :y

In principle, in their intended application, later DEX spec oils are backward compatible. Their intended application is automatic gearboxes, not power steering systems, however, and I think there was found to be an incompatibility between Dex 3 and one of the hoses in the PAS system.

It's not like the fluid gets a hard life in the PAS system, so no benefit in using anything later than Dex 2 anyway.

Noted.  Shall edit my statement above!  Maybe Dex 3 is backward compatible, just not in Omegas!  ???

Well yes... If it wasn't for the leaking pipe issue on omega dex 3 would be fine. Put it that way.
Guessing dex 2 is cheaper, but then as we're more likely to have dex 3 lieing around dex 2 would be an extra expense anyway sadly.

Ahh yes :

Field Remedy: 1570
Subject: Oil for Power Steering - Wrong specification in TIS
Models: Engines: Option:
Vivaro 2001...,Movano 1999...,Omega-B 1994...,Frontera-B 1999... All,All,All,All Power Steering
Complaint: Oil for Power Steering incorrectly specified in TIS.
Cause:
Production:

Remedy:
TIS 2000 indicates that the power steering oil specification for Vivaro is
Dexron III. This is now incorrect.
The original fluid was Dexron III  (PN 90 510 269, Cat-No. 19 40 763) which
was used to service certain power steering and automatic transmission fluids
(ATF).
This oil is no longer available so a new version of oil Dexron III has been
specified for the affected ATF (PN 93 160 372, Cat-No. 19 40 712) however
this oil is not compatible with power steering systems and should not be
used for this function because this may result in leakages.
To service the power steering system the oil now specified has reverted back
to Dexron II (PN 90 350 342, Cat-No. 19 40 700).
This should prevent any confusion when trying to select the correct oil for
the correct application.
NOTE: This information is valid for all models except Sintra (partnumber
90 513 486, Cat: 19 40 707) and Astra-G/Zafira/Vectra-C/Signum (partnumber
93 160 458, Cat: 19 40 715).
FunctionalGroup: M - Steering
Complaint Group: 23 - Wrong Indication
Trouble Code: None

So it's down to which particular  spec of Dex III - thank goodness there's no confusion now  ::)

aye, looks like there was an original dex3, then prob a different supplier, which caused issues, they couldnt find a dex3 that did work, so went back a spec to dex2.

What dex6 would be like is anyones guess, as theoretically thats backward compatible.
