What DO I have???
« on: 10 October 2011, 23:40:47 »

Hi,
Can anyone help me ID my engine?
When I bought the car, I thought it was a 3.2l (I know I should've checked the log book)
On doing so, after I got home, it says 3.0l. The boot says 3.2 too...

The plenum looks like the one fitted to the 2.6/3.2 (long) but it's not fly-by-wire and it has 1 coil pack.

The car is Ex-police and I'm sure they do all sorts but What do I have????

How can I ID my engine?

Guessing your car is 2001 or older and a 3.0... As standard the 3.2 was DBW so unless someone has been messing seriously it's a 3.0 that someone decided to stick 3.2 badges on

Also long plenums were fitted to 3.0 from 1998 onwards  :)

If you jack the car up on the drivers side, using a torch look at the side of the engine. It will have either 3.0 or 3.2 stamped on the block.

On the Top Inside edge of the heads is always stamped what engine it is too. just incase your not convinced..

Like already said though 2.6 & 3.2 are dbw.

Engines can be changed....log book should be accurate on leaving the factory, but that was a long time ago.

Engines can be changed.... ....

but would you go to the effort of swapping DBW for a cable and coil packs for DIS etc etc?  ::)  ;) ;)

yes, if your engine blew up and thats all you could cheaply / easily get.

.. but I wouldn't convert DBW to cable or vice versa. Just swap block and heads... and perhaps the numbers on the boot, in this case.

Not convinced you can as you would need the DBW ecu which is expecting can interfaces to the ABS an auto box (if fitted)

The OP was wondering what engine he had? It says 3.2 on the boot and yet the plenum is not drive by wire.
This would lead you to think it would be a 3.0 or even a 2.5.
I know someone who paid a lot of money for a 3.0 engine & gearbox to be fitted to his car, to have me breaking the news it was a 2.5 did not make him a happy bunny.
There is however a stamp on the drivers side of the engine block about  an inch high, which will tell you what the bloke is. There are also stamps on the heads to prove too.
Engines can be changed, and perhaps everyone does not notify DVLA either.

I reckon it has had a new boot lid.

Engine. As Daz will mention he has had a 3.0 with full DBW gubbins, and the alternative is as possible.

Could be 3.0 as standard, 3.2 on 3.0 inlet, 2.5 or 2.6 on 3.0 inlet.
