I have been working in London for the last 5 months. For me, personally it is no fun at all.
My day starts at 07.30 and finishes between 20.00 and 22.00. Therefore I have no spare time.
I mentioned to my boss that the permanent staff only work 40 hours, can I not have a few early finishes? His answer was wonderful - " there are no jobs in the north east, which is why you are working in London, get on with it". So my life is work, sleep, work , sleep :'( :'( I also find the hotels are generally, quite poor, unless you are paying £120 upwards (not out of my own pocket, thank you!!). I can't wait for this recession to start evaporating, I would take a large pay cut to work nearer Newcastle, and be near to my two boys......oh and SWMBO  :-X
Anyway, enough of my complaining. My bills are being paid, the family has a roof over their heads and food is on the table :) :)

I worked in London and commuted back to north from May 1982 to September 1982 -  hotel expenses paid etc and then moved family down here in October 1982. Best thing for us and no regrets at all. Maybe best for you as well Zombie.

30 years further on and the strain comes with sick parents etc but you cannot base everything around this eventuality. Difficult situation when it hits though.

its a kind of lonely existence working away from home. I spent 5 years testing the new trains down south, spent a lot of time in Margate  :-X , East Ham, etc getting home every few days, then away again.

by the time it finished, my kids had grown up. From youngsters to over 18s, I missed a fair chunk of their growing up, being there as a Dad, helping out, etc. Time and memories lost for ever.
