The Saga Continues - The Black Beastie - Engine dying
« on: 29 October 2011, 22:34:47 »

So.......the recovery of the Black Beatie continues.

I have been monitoring the engine running temp as at times she has run slightly hotter than normal and on a occasion I found that the fans did not come on until the gauge was on 100.

Plan for this was to change the low level fan switch to see if this sorted this slight concern.

BUT

Last weekend on return from Cardiff she started to stall with no throttle.
Very distintive - you could tell whilst changing gear that the engine was dying down.
So it was not a problem with the engine trying to tick over as it was already died.
This was constant from when the problem started.

Pulled over and thought about life for a while. Restarted and the problem had gone.
Up the M4 I went. :o
About 20 miles from home the problem started again. As soon as I throttled off, the engine would die.
Limped home. :'(

Problem was intermittent over the next couple of days.
Paper clip test displayed a code 19......so TheBoy kindly sold me his spare crank sensor and replaced.
Error code cleared and she drove lovely on Wednesday. :)

So based on the above I was pleased to get back from Cardiff and thought all was sorted.
Thursday and on the way back from work the problem occurred again.
Exactley the same problem, though node code errors displayed with the paper clip test.

Since Thursday the problem has not re-occurred, but I only do a few miles a day.
I obviously have a problem that I need to resolve as I dont have confidence in the car running and driving around Milton Keynes roundabouts with the engine dying with no throttle is very difficult.

Looking for some ispiration with this one......Coil pack maybe?

Hopefully you will be able to direct me on this.

Many thanks all.

The memory plays tricks but I recall a prob with indicated tempt and actual real tempt back before I had the luxury of a T2.

Changed the inlet tempt sensor and that made a difference, back in the day, but not sure
How that relates tI current probs. sorry.

Idle control valve ? :-\

Yep - was thinking about that, but was not sure because of the way the engine would totally die with no throttle. To keep it running I would have to rev it up over 3000 revs.....
So was not sure if the ICV could produce this type of issue....and intermittently.

Will plan to give it a clean anyway. :y

When I had a problem with mine (several years ago) I seem to remember it did just that.Engine runs fine until its supposed to idle - then it cant.Ten minute job to take it off and clean it (carb cleaner or probably any other solvent - petrol ?) then a few drops of oil to lube it and put it back. :y
If that doesnt work, valve could be faulty. Not sure how to test it but Im sure someone will. ;)
After that - more involved stuff I would imagine. :-\

Given it cuts on closed throttle, clean icv.

ICV cleaned, so will see how it goes.

Had theboys tech 2 on it today. All seemed well.
MAF Data good.

Only time will tell. :-\

Have a trip to Stoke on Saturday, so that will give it a good run.

Will see how it goes. :y

Try to start the engine right when it has stalled, if it wouldn't, I would suspect the tempsensor for the ECU. Mine was like that before it died on me totally, and then it came up with faultcode 15.
If you couldn't find the fault, try to change the tempsensor, not expensive att all, but worth a try  :y

If its stalling with no throttle input then that points towards an idle air issue.

I assume when its not stalling that the idle is even?

Given the fact that its a digital type fault (either there or not!) then it points to a valve of some sort and I can think of two that might do this and they are:

1) Idle control valve
2) EGR valve

So I would be cleaning them both well and potentialy blocking the EGR off (if its not already done)

If I remember correctly the EGR has been moved to below the battery, can't remember however if the plenum has been renewed with a 2.6/3.2 one or just blocked up...
