FACIST NANNY STATE >:( >:( >:( When will they do something useful, next you know we will not be able to have a say on Europe. ;D

I am an ex smoker, I wish that I'd never started the dirty disgusting habit, but it was my choice. I don't agree with banning it in pubs a smoke room was perfectly acceptable for those to enjoy a fag with their pint. Now to get a pint I have to walk through a disgusting fog just to get into the boozer, and don't tell the ban didn't affect the business.
If people come to my house socially they are at liberty to smoke indoors, not be sent outside to the naughty step. However it's a no no in my car because of the confined enviroment. They can do what they want in theirs, dogging if that floats their boat, 'Sorry sir that lady appears to be smoking a cigar in you car!!. ;D ;D

I can't agree to smoking around children their health is more important. :y

The road rage is a very valid point, and despite fact that alcohol was blamed for a rise in air rage following the airlines banning smoking it was nicotine withdrawal. We flew to the Canaries, and after 5 hours without a fag I was homicdal at the smallest irritation.

They can't stop mobile phone use which is a dangerous distraction so how the hell are the police going to enforce this one, have they now't better to do?

Bloody barmey, and when tabacco is finally reduced to the status of a class A drug just what will they tax to replace the vast revenues the exchequer gets from smokers. >:( >:( >:(

 :y :y :y

I object to only one point.. it was not our choice.. as a very young person when I started (probably 16-17 cant remember now ) most of the community around us were smoking and it was a sign that you want to show "I'm grown up" ;D

most of you will remember the alpha male in Marlboro ad they show before the films.. an image and an idea created in our minds.. you want to be a man , smoke cigarette >:(

and one more point.. nicotine is same class chemical (and have similiar molecular structure) as those addictive expensive stuff .. so not different..

Tobacco is already classed as class A by some people.

My view is this, if tobacco is legal so should cannabis, if cannabis is illegal so should tobacco, as tobacco is more harmfull*

Think of the tax legalising cannabis would raise.

* known partakers of both, only issue I have seen is pot users getting addicted to tobacco.

Cannabis use often causes horrific mental health issues.Anyone who works in mental health these days will probably tell you that their wards are full of young people suffering the effects of cannabis use.Self harming, attempted or actual suicide etc.Any politician who legalises it should be hung, drawn and quartered imo.

not true. i know people who smoke pot but not cigarettes. i actually smoked less fags when i smoked pot.  but no 2 persons are the same. i would rather sit in a bar having a spliff than a pint. more relaxing in my opinion. just don't mix the 2 together.

I thought this issue might open a can of worms but this thread is about potentially banning smoking in your car, not a slanging match between smokers and non-smokers. Lets keep it friendly and on subject. :y

Yes, well said Bob.

On the subject of the OP this is yet another regulation (should it ever be enacted) that will be easy to police by remote means - cameras or anti smoking while driving or sitting in a motor vehicle wardens – and one which will ultimately provide more than sufficient funds for the private enterprise group/s that will no doubt be charged with running the scheme and for the government who will siphon off sufficient money to help ‘run’ the country.

As everyone is now on some database or other, there will be nowhere for the law abiding driver to hide.

Personally I feel that if using your phone or drinking coffee at the wheel is not allowed then why should smoking be?

I personally do not do either of those thing Matt, but I don't find smoking a distraction when driving. I think sneezing while driving is probably more of a distraction and has been known to cause accidents, so are they going to ban that?!! Where do you draw the line? I think good old common sense needs to be used rather than bullying tactics. ::)

Maybe so in your experience but I know of many people who have nearly crashed because they dropped the cigarette or part of the hot ash fell in their lap.

Plus it gets on my tits when I see people just chucking them out of their car window.  They are not biodegradable.

Nor is a the huge amount of rubbish discarded daily by most of the population! ::)

It still doesn't justify the action.  Discarding rubbish also gets on my tits, even more so on the water

As most know, I smoke ::) I also smoke in the car ::)

But, if I have non-smoking passengers I don't smoke except in exceptional circumstances and with their permission.

I even try to be considerate in the open air and stand away from non smokers if I can.

I can't smoke in my van because it's a workplace (not that I'd want to risk it with up to 440L of mixed fuel sloshing about behind me anyway :o) which is fine. In fact, it might help me decide to give up... I'm nearly at the point that I want to :y

But banning it in cars is, IMHO, a step too far >:(

... ban production of cigarettes, job done!

I've been in your car Bob, as you may remember :) and being an ex smoker that can smell ash tray and smoke stench from 50yards, there was no smell at all iirc...? So guessing it's no biggy for you...?

I agree with a ban totally. However there are far more serious things to worry about IMO. Even though I can smell a smoker in the car in front when sat in my own car with windows shut.  >:(

If smoking in a car, the smoker should be forced to drive with thier own window shut, not just for benefit of others, but to bang home how really unpleasant it is, even for the smoker. I mean why else do they drive with the window open? Because it's a bloody awful habit is why.

Also shows the strength of the "drug" that people are prepared to endure it.

Obviously a ban is in force for company vehicles, and others in the car should be protected from the filth also. Now it's to protect the smoker from themselves. Although in the last instance, a ban there implies authorities believe all else is right with the world, which is a little disturbing IMO!

Well, it won't be alcohol as this is now well within the Health Nazi's sights and will probably be made class A drug at the same time. So it will have to be fuel, so you won't be able to afford to run a car, let along drive a car and smoke your illegal black-market class A at the same time.  :o :o :o

I've never smoked, but if it is legal then I think a sensible approach to protect smokers and non-smokers rights is needed. Pubs, restaurants having a smoking room would have been more sensible and done less damage to their businesses. This combined with the minimum wage, health and safety, council alcohol and entertainment licencing Nazis is slowly but surely kill the main focal point of British communities the pub and social clubs.  >:( >:( >:(

If people want to smoke in their cars, what is the problem? I can see where this is heading next, after that, it will be a ban on smoking in homes where under 18's live, with children taken into care if the adults don't comply. ::) ::)

Once, the health Nazis have finished with smoking, it will then be drinking, how long before pedestrians can be Breathalyzed and if over a limit deemed safe, they get an on the spot fine and an automatic 7 day drink banning order.  ::) ::) ::)

It isn't just the drivers smoking that will be affected should such a ban come into place, it will be any occupant of the car...

Oh come on Chris, lets be sensible about this. ::) With that statement you might as well say ok, lets ban everything thats bad for you or anything that affects other people - ban alcohol as it kills thousands each year, causes violent behaviour, and costs the NHS a fortune. Ban sweets and cakes as it makes people obese, rots teeth and costs the NHS a fortune, ban the internal cobustion engine as it's pollution affects everybody and makes people ill......and so on and so on. Where do you draw the line? There's very little a person can do these days without affecting others in some form or another. Smoking is an individual choice like all of these things. If I could live my life again, without a doubt I would not never start smoking but when I started there was little known about the dangers associated with it and as Cem mentioned in his post, it was actually encouraged and glamourised. Let's not forget, during the war the government actually supplied our forces with free cigarettes. Sorry to bang on, but my opinion would remain the same wether I smoked or not - freedom of choice, and I get fed up with being treated like some kind of lepper for something I chose to do all those years ago. Bugger, now I'm going off topic - this was supposed to be about banning smoking in cars! ::)

Yes, you're right about the car - I don't very often smoke in it but when I do it's normally on a long run with the window open but I doubt if anyone behind would smell it at 70+mph! ;)
