Whats interesting is the response you see when you sit down with someone who has smoked for years in your clinic and tell them that they/their loved ones have cancer. All this bravado and manliness is replaced with an emotion that is difficult to describe on a forum.

Its impossible to ban the sale of tobacco because of various reasons financial and political.

I am therefore for anything that reduces the easy path to smoking, be it an increase in tax or a ban in as many places as possible. Anything that will discourage the younger generation to not take up smoking is welcome in my book. It has to be cultural for it to be effective in discouraging the young ones from smoking.
Not sure about the bravado manly thing but otherwise i agree with you. Cancer & CPOD took my Mum in July.

I don't smoke anymore but think if you bend over and take one for the team the Government get there way again. What will they move onto next??

Why should anyone care who smokes in their own car as long as it doesn't effect any passengers?

I also agree it has not helped with Pubs. Didn't see the problem with Smoke Rooms myself.

What I do not like though is if someone lights up a fag whilst someone is eating... Thats just bad manners in my opinion.....

A sad thing Guy and alot have lost someone close too them through Cancer. But, not all smokers get Cancer. People who have never smoked get Cancer.
Granted smoking is bad for you, but the crap that is sprayed on food to make it grow quicker must be something to do with it aswell as things which are put into foods.....

In my opinion

... ban production of cigarettes, job done!

I've been in your car Bob, as you may remember :) and being an ex smoker that can smell ash tray and smoke stench from 50yards, there was no smell at all iirc...? So guessing it's no biggy for you...?

I agree with a ban totally. However there are far more serious things to worry about IMO. Even though I can smell a smoker in the car in front when sat in my own car with windows shut.  >:(

If smoking in a car, the smoker should be forced to drive with thier own window shut, not just for benefit of others, but to bang home how really unpleasant it is, even for the smoker. I mean why else do they drive with the window open? Because it's a bloody awful habit is why.

Also shows the strength of the "drug" that people are prepared to endure it.

Obviously a ban is in force for company vehicles, and others in the car should be protected from the filth also. Now it's to protect the smoker from themselves. Although in the last instance, a ban there implies authorities believe all else is right with the world, which is a little disturbing IMO!

So can I

More pollution comes out of a car exhaust than from a ciggarette.

CO2 H2O vs carcinogens!!

Also cars are useful

As with everything, it's those who take the P*ss that are promoting such changes in policy, I suspect.

Smoking on a straight road with few hazards to negotiate, and the window open, probably doesn't present a safety issue at all. I've done it enough when I used to imbibe. Most of the smoke is drawn out of the window and it's unlikely to impair your control of the vehicle.

However, I see so many people who get into their car and immediately spark up, with the window closed, and start trying to negotiate their way out of a car park and through an urban area while driving single-handed. That's a dangerous distraction IMHO, more so when they drop a burning ember into their crotch. Eyes watering due to the smoke and not in full control of the vehicle.

I even saw a van driver the other day driving through town smoking and using a phone at the same time. :o

If people behave like this we can expect consequences, unfortunately.

And yes, it's obvious that smoking in such a confined area with small children present isn't going to do them any good at all, so no problem with banning that, IMHO. Not that a ban will stop anyone, much like the ban on mobile phones.

It would be hoped he did not get the two mixed up otherwise he would get a burnt ear and a soggy mobile! ;)

I'd have no problem with a ban on smoking in cars when children are present, as I consider smoking in a small enclosed space where there are kids, sheer stupidity!!!  >:(  and lets face it you see it alot! There's a young Mum on my street, who puts her 5 year old in the back, gets in the drivers seat, lights up, seatbelt on and away she goes... and she does it EVERYTIME!!!!  >:( >:( >:( Poor kid! :'(

The dangers of smoking and passive smoking are well known and proven! So if smokers can't show some common sense and moderate their behaviour, then legislate says I !!!  8) :y

 ......

and why can't you do both at the same time?  ??? ???

And there's always comments about driving single handed when eating/smoking/picking nose/etc, I almost always drive with one hand in my Omega & her Smart ................... what's the problem? Some don't have a choice, but still have a licence and are considered safe. On the other hand, my father-in-law has two but I consider him a hazard to all & sundry, his 'excuse' was a stroke 20+ yrs ago. How about a campaign to remove 'disabled' drivers from the road to under the safety banner while we're at it!!

Your other hand is presumably available at short notice if you need it? And I'm guessing you use 2 hands in car parks and other urban areas requiring more concentration.

Indeed, but, again, they don't have a source of distraction in the other hand that will burn the interior of their car or them id they drop it and, if their disability is severe, they will have a vehicle adapted to suit them.

Oh come on Chris, lets be sensible about this. ::) With that statement you might as well say ok, lets ban everything thats bad for you or anything that affects other people - ban alcohol as it kills thousands each year, causes violent behaviour, and costs the NHS a fortune. Ban sweets and cakes as it makes people obese, rots teeth and costs the NHS a fortune, ban the internal cobustion engine as it's pollution affects everybody and makes people ill......and so on and so on. Where do you draw the line? There's very little a person can do these days without affecting others in some form or another. Smoking is an individual choice like all of these things. If I could live my life again, without a doubt I would not never start smoking but when I started there was little known about the dangers associated with it and as Cem mentioned in his post, it was actually encouraged and glamourised. Let's not forget, during the war the government actually supplied our forces with free cigarettes. Sorry to bang on, but my opinion would remain the same wether I smoked or not - freedom of choice, and I get fed up with being treated like some kind of lepper for something I chose to do all those years ago. Bugger, now I'm going off topic - this was supposed to be about banning smoking in cars! ::)

Yes, you're right about the car - I don't very often smoke in it but when I do it's normally on a long run with the window open but I doubt if anyone behind would smell it at 70+mph! ;)
Smokers won't notice at all Bob. There's a level of ignorance built in to nicotine, and the addiction, that smokers are completely unaware of. It's your choice to start smoking, and it's your free choice to give up, except nicotine itself takes away that very free choice being defended so readily here due to addiction, yet smokers don't notice their loss of free choice by the habit itself.

Smokers are addicted, it is not a choice. It's not something to wish on an enemy, never mind a friend or aquaintance, loved one etc etc. Never mind a child in a car!

Ban it!

There's a limit to what you can do with one hand on one side of the steering wheel, while other needed controls ie wipers, are on the other.  ;)
