i was a smoker......however all of us have the right of freedom of speech.....look what it did with maggie thatcher and the poll tax.....whatever your views on that subject was....people power made her back down.......now then i do not for one minute suggest riots or rebellion but why cant we all voice our opinion in the correct why and have things like this discussed sensibly and then the majority wins...now thats fair and just isnt it folks.....oh and by the way i am with all you smokers all the way..so put my name down against the ban  >:( :y

Whats interesting is the response you see when you sit down with someone who has smoked for years in your clinic and tell them that they/their loved ones have cancer. All this bravado and manliness is replaced with an emotion that is difficult to describe on a forum.

Its impossible to ban the sale of tobacco because of various reasons financial and political.

I am therefore for anything that reduces the easy path to smoking, be it an increase in tax or a ban in as many places as possible. Anything that will discourage the younger generation to not take up smoking is welcome in my book. It has to be cultural for it to be effective in discouraging the young ones from smoking.

It's even worse when you are the one being told that you have it....... :'( :'( :'(

Is it cultural? increased knowledge and advertising campaigns and yet smoking amongst young people is increasing...... :( :( :(

When i had a company car i was banned from smoking in that or it was a disciplinary offence.

I am an ex smoker and think it is a dirty smelly habit that is proven to cause illness and possibly death, but if you want to kill yourself or get lung cancer then that is up to you.

Many a time when i smoked in the car (roll ups) i'd end up dropping a red end in my lap.And how many times did you chuck a butt out the window only for it to blow back in ? I had a few burn marks in the back seat to prove it.

Smoking in a car is dangerous, but so is leaning over to get a CD out the glove compartment or eating a bag of crisps or sandwich if you are having your lunch 'on the road' like many of us do.

Getting way beyond a joke, we are being treated as kids with father adolf at the helm as slowly our right of personal choice are being eroded. Since labour came to power in 97 they have "invented" over 2000 new laws and restrictions, turned the Police Force into a remake of the Gestapo and managed to destroy the economy along the way. The Tories are just adding to the control state where by you will do as we will you and we will monitor you as you do it. Most of this is sold to us are being for our own benefit. when the first cameras arrived we where fed the line "we will only be using them to monitor town centres for the purpose of safety and crime prevention" 10 years down the road you now struggle to get more than a few hundred yards from your front door without appearing on film footage somewhere. We all know the uses they have been put to regards motorists and the millions that is generated from mostly decent people going about there every day business. If they get this through these same cameras will be used to catch and issue you with yet another fixed penalty, this time the offence will be having a fag on the way to work £80.00 cu ching 5 mph over the speed limit £80.00 cu ching no seat belt £80.00 cu ching. So late to work rushing forget belt fag on the way cause your stressed 46 through a 40 at five in the morning and if you dare to make a call to explain your lateness during your 5 > 10 mile journey ( by which time you have most likely been caught by at least 3 cameras ) thats a weeks wages and a 12 month ban sir all of which can be achieved with the Gestapo sat on there arse drinking tea whilst awaiting his £30,000+ a year to arrive in his bank account. Ah well least now your jobs gone you longer have to get up at 5am you no longer need your motor and you can smoke as many fags as you please whilst lounging on your sofa watching daytime TV and waiting for the dole cheque to hit the doormat. TV being the best bet as your internet and email may soon be monitored (this is yet another piece of legislation being fed to us under the guise of keeping kids safe from porn whilst online). So all they did to do is now find a way to convince us that allowing monitoring inside your own home (likely to along the lines of terrorist threat or child abuse) is a good idea and they pretty much have you in a free prison. Wake up folks big brother is well and truly here and imposing rules on an ever increasing scale. So for all the do gooders who dropped there pants and bent over I hope you have a very sore arse, you bloody well should have considering the size of the stick you got shafted with.

And just to add, the camera and criminal line which are all fed is b*ll*cks. The whole system has a massive floor in respect that it almost totally relies on the vehicle number plate. If you think about it this actually aids the criminal. Stolen Mondeo but with plates cloned from a legal Mondeo and the whole system fails that simple. The answer they came up with was the steps you have to make to get new number plates. So the question is how hard is it to get replacement plates Answer: not that hard. So a billion pound monitoring system thats pretty much only any good for catching the honest.

Ah, but you have missed a slight point there. the cost of smoking to the NHS in the form of heart attacks, strokes, cancer and the cost of treating/caring for them is massive. Which is why the NHS and doctors try to get you to stop smoking before its too late.

But you also have to remember that Tobacco is one of the biggest incomes for the government... If everyone in the country stopped smoking tomorrow the country would be bankrupt by Christmas ;)

And nurses as well, well in 5 minutes when the have had a ciggy, I can not give any stats but from my personal knowledge of one office of community nurses, 1 in 3 smoke.....And no, I am not judging them, I am the last person to be able to do so.....  Do they smoke in their cars, provided on a lease scheme, by the NHS?................I could not possibly comment.... :-X
