One month into ownership
« on: 17 November 2011, 20:21:32 »

Car 2003 3.2 Elite 68,000
Starts first time everytime, very smooth no vibrations knocks or bangs all the way to 130 (according to the speedo) would have gone further but ran out of road, I mean track.
Engine is smashing no oil or water use and since Daz got his hands on it to replace the cambelt its a peach.
The only gripes till now are:
1) The rear suspension sometimes jacks itself all the way up (temp cure is to let the air compressor start with the car than pull the fuse whilst I make my mind up as to whether to sort it proper or just replace the shocks with standard ones)
2) Auto box, changes up and down and is smooth, the only thing I dislike is sometimes when in top and the speed drops to say 45ish the box seems to drop two gears and then almost straight away moves up one gear (not sure on this one will have to look into it further)
3) Slight creak coming from the dash on the drivers side, only really noticeable because the car is otherwise so quiet.(very minor but will have to sort it cause its getting on my t**s)
Went straight through the MOT and no advice, all said and done for a car of that class at under 2k purchase I am well pleased.  :)

Number 2 is 'normal' - or at least not an indication of a 'box problem.. the Omega box always seems to have a hard time choosing a cog. A gearbox update might help, but with a 2003 plate car you might already be on the latest software..

Oh and the CD and changer is fussy as regards discs (dont want to start another thread regards CDR) what I have found is the CDR with the Ritek dye burnt at 16x speed (the lowest my burners go down to with the Nero software) all problems are solved.

I have read loads of the threads regarding the discs but not altogether sure I buy into them, example here is I have a Philips stand alone disc player in the house which I bought new something like 15 years ago, this unit has been thrashed to within an inch of its life by er indoors who uses it at least 8 hrs a week and has done since it was new. It to has always been picky with the discs but given the maths 416 hrs a year x 15 = 6240 playing hrs and still going strong. I do buy the original discs but back them up straight away and then only ever use the copies so out of the 6240 playing hrs 85% of that time would have been spent playing CDR even though the unit was never designed for them. In terms of economics it it jacked tomorrow it would not owe me anything.

Ritek dye means nought I'm afraid.  Generally, Ritek dyes are used on low quality media.  Additionally the burn is still too fast.

Using CDR *WILL* knacker the laser, but using a far better disk (ie, Verbatim or genuine TY (but beware fakes - most TY are)) and a much slower burn speed, coupled with a top quality desktop writer *MAY* just allow it to last a bit longer.

Of it being on the latest, or of there being a later firmware available? (I can't remember what I read about years/softwares/etc .. t'was probably you who posted it last, too - or Kevin - but I have the memory of a goldfish)

Yeah, I know, my 21yr old 10 disc changer that I fitted in my GTE when I had it is still going strong, and only ever seen CDRs since about 1996 when I got my first writer.  The CDC2's in various Omegas have always been trouble free, despite CDRs.

However, the CDC3, as used in CCR2006, CCRT2008 and NCDC201x absolutely does fail quickly after showing it some CDRs.  Most Philips Car Audio from that era does.  The Philips changer in her Rover 25 always needs replacement for the same reason.

There have been updates since 2003. Definately.

Not to say that a conciensus dealer hasn't already applied them ;).

The Verbatim discs I have tried jump in the house player and the changer in the car will not see them.
So regards the box would you think it would benefit from an upgrade if available and how would I know what version it is now running.

Out of sheer guilt, I was pondering organising something at my place in the new year. I can't not go to that, then. ;D

Poor burn, poor writer, too fast, or fake media (assuming not just a one-off)

You can't tell f/w version of box without Tech2. Given your location, might be worth a trip to Marks DTM Calib just South of Nottingham :y
