I dont have sports package and wont be getting it to watch F1. F1 will lose a huge amount of viewers from this move, but no doubt will gain a lot of money, which reinforces the obvious really - they are much more interested in money than the fans.No surprise there.
The BBC arent skint - they just chose to alloocate funds elsewhere - the olympics probably....yaaaaawn.

Some people are asking for confirmation though, this is the official release:

The dedicated channel will be provided at no extra charge to all Sky TV customers who take both Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 or the HD pack of channels. It will be found at 408 in Sky’s on-screen guide, after a scheduled move of the Sky Sports channels. Sky Sports viewers without the Sky+ HD pack will receive a standard definition version.

While I sympathise with those who dont have sky, this is good news as we already have the HD pack, and historically sky's coverage of Motorsport has been absolutely first class IMO. Although how much influence sky will have over the live feed...?

Looking forward to it greatly, ESP the extras with onboard cameras.

Financially I suspect the real driving force behind tv rights will be Mr Ecclestone. No broadcaster in their right mind would turn down F1 by preference. Problem is paying mop head for the privilege. Blame Bernie.

Ditto :y :y Although I don't have the sports channels so I hope the interpretation that HD subscribers get it is correct :y :y

Although thinking about it, BBC had on board cameras via red button at the last round iirc.

Brazil this weekend. :)

Rumoured commentary team is David Croft and Martin Brundle, fingers crossed this is true.

Hopefully Brundle still gets to do his grid walks and that there will be after show analysis like the BBC do on the F1 forum.  Sounds like they're going to.

The live free practice and dedicated channel are big pluses for me too.

Needless to say, I don't have or want Sky. I do not think it represents value for money. And I sure as hell don't want to watch F1, even if it was free.  I don't think BBC offer value for money either, as they think people want knobenders etc.

chrisgixer - I think Formula One control the feeds. Sky are unlikely to have any input, so it will remain as crap as ever with massively wide angle shots.

Martin Imber - post deleted, final warning.

Done a little digging, found 2008 ITV viewing figures:

http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/f1-information/f1-tv-audience-figures/2008-itv-f1-tv-audience-figures/

There are what, approx 30 million UK house holds? Sky has 10.3 million subscribers, most who like sports already have it so can't see numbers taking too much of a dive

You are completely missing the point. *IF* it is a mainstream sport watched by millions, it should be FTA.

Personally, glad it is partly going to Sky, hopefully the beeb will have money to make something decent. Doubt it though ;D
