Most cars have three sets of rings.

The first two are primarily to provide a pressure seal (althoguh they do also give some oil control) to stop exhaust gases passing by the piston edges, these are the compression rings.

The third is an oil control ring and is often made up of a spring section and two small thin rings.

Have you tried the heavy flush yet?

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

Wots one of those Mark?

I suspect Mark was referring to Tecsol - http://www.gasolutions.co.uk/engine-treatmetns.html (I seem to remember him suggesting this to you in an earlier thread? Or maybe to someone else)

Damn! Beaten to it.. ;D

Thanks for the replies :y So far just stuck some very heavy handed redex in...put some engine flush in the oil...will any do or are some better than others?? Do I then do an oil change or leave it cleaning for a while?? Certainly loads of crap has flushed out the exhaust since I did that...

When I changed the spark plugs they were all pretty bad, covered in a heavy deposit of black stuff, but cylinder 1, the one that currently has no compression, was dreadful even when compared to the rest...

So what's a heavy flush??

Also, would removing the spark plug and pouring in some kind of cleaner leaving it over night make a difference?? If so, what cleaner is best for this? Redex?? Carb Cleaner??
