zonealarm+avast

Agreed - Anti Virus Avast or AVG freebies, both good
Firewall - Zonealarm freebie
Spyware, Malware etc - use both Spybot S&D & Adaware - both free

Paid for - Norton &/or McAfee - but tend to slow down computers noticably, particularly on startup

Under the "free" section the above is the definitive answer. Trust me, I've re-installed XP after drive-by downloads a few times.

Since the free stuff is as good as it gets, no need to line the pockets of Symantec or MacAfee. Both are system hogs IMO.

The other really, really important free downloads are the ones that keep your software up to date.

The last piece of free software is the bit between your ears (called common sense) when you are surfing risky sites. Never say "Yes" to a pop-up alert. Especially if it claims to have spotted a problem that it can fix it for you. Etc...

Purely relying on firewalls that run on the host is not a sensible solution, esp if the host is a desktop.  You should also have a firewall at the network perimeter.

We had IP Tables crash on one of our gigabit connected News (NNTP) servers, which got zombied.  I gigabit connected zombie connected 1 hop from the UK core internet hub is a very dangerous thing....  ...bloddy Linux crap.

That's easy for you to say....

A router with NAT does tend to be a better firewall than XP/ZA/software firewalls, good point.

Never never never use norton, it is the worst performing software I have ever come across.
And it will cause you lots of problems with other software.
