Hello all

Over the last month or so I've had the alarm go off for no apparent reason, so i thought "time to change the powersounder", especially after reading this thread.

I've just phoned my local stealer, they said "it depends on which one you have".

Apparently there is a unit with the letters PJ on a label - that is £168 + VAT and is not a stock item.

If there are no letters as above, then it is £69 + VAT and is on the shelf.

Then it apparently needs to be programmed to the car???

I haven't removed the unit from my car yet, so I don't know which one it is. But does it really need to be programmed?

Just remove it & bin it.

Given Vauxhall's dip in parts quality in recent years, I wouldn't be surprised if the replacement was cheaply made and just as likely to go bang.

Just remove it & bin it.

For me, that is an option of last resort, simply because of the insurance implications.

How's the bike going, Tunnie? Not really been the best weather for it.

I don't really believe of any insurance implications. Far more likely to pick up on head unit changed, non standard seats or something else if they are going to be that picky!

Omega's are not desirable, quite hard to steal. Most likey they would nick the keys, which renders powersounder irrelevant anyway.

You will also have far more grief with insurance, if it goes up in flames  ;)

Bike, well was planning on Scotland as I after 17th May, I'm not back in work until June. But weather plus backlog of jobs to do, means this is unlikely. But thanks for asking

Just had my power sounder removed at the Wycombe Meet...thanks Alan. :y
To be honest, I would rather my car not go up in flames ;) Why should you tell the insurance company about it anyway. I won't be. As far as they are concerned, some previous owner could have removed it. Signing a declaration is signing to 'the best of your knowledge and belief'.....which is different to 'I definately know'.........
Just my opinion.....

It is mandatory for all UK cars after 1996 to have a thatcham approved immobiliser conforming to Category 2 standard - many manufacturers opted for the higher Thatcham Category 1 status that also included the powersounder. Although it could be argued that the Cat2 still remains if the sounder is removed, you would have to inform your insurers that you do not have an approved alarm system. But the problem that many face is that they treat the Cat1 and Cat2 as being installed at the same time, and removal , alteration or tampering with any part of the security system renders the full operation of it questionable - ie: they can (and do!) wriggle out of it.

It does happen, and I know many who have fallen foul of this over various marques - sadly it is NOT an old wives tale, and this urban myth actually has some credence.

I'm 99% sure that's bull
