I've just bought a car in a Motability auction.  I went to the post office to tax it and they wouldn't do it because the taxation class is disabled.....  I'm feeling abit daft now as it was something I hadn't considered..... 

I phoned up the DVLA and they told me that I can't change the taxation class because I'm not the registered keeper, and I will have to become the registered keeper to change the class and get a tax disc.  As I want to sell it on I don't want to register it in my name as it adds another keeper, but it might make it difficult to sell if the new owner can't tax it either!! 

It all seems a massive faff to me and I'm wondering if any of the traders here have any advice?

It seems unusual for the government to make it difficult for me to give them my money.....

No way round it im afraid. needs to be in your name & taxation class changed at your local dvla office.
 
cant be changed at the post office from disabled to plg but from plg to disabled it can. odd i know.

If your working in the motor trade, can't see why you can’t register the vehicle in the trade name and then get your tax disc sorted out.

If you're a private individual, just buying and selling to make bit of money, then the only way around it is to register the car in your name as the keeper, then get the tax disc changed over to PLG.

Or if you have a receipt from the Auction that you legally have ownership of the vehicle, simply leave it as it is and then explain to a potential buyer why no change on the official paper.
Personally I would change it to your name as may be less hassle overall

The previous owner should have filled out / notified DVLA that they are no longer the keeper, as if they don't then any speeding fines, etc will still go to their home address I would imagine.

I'm not a professional trader, just do abit on the side.  The Motability auction seemed like a good idea.... 

If I go into a local DVLA office will they print out a new log book in my name there and then or does it still have to come through the post?   

Will it affect the value much having 2 former keepers as opposed to one? 

I guess it'll be alot easier to sell if it's taxed and ready to go....

V5 is prepared centrally, not at the LVLO, so will be a delay of a few days getting returned to you.  You will, however, get a disc there and then on payment and submission of V5 for processing.

If the LVLO is nearby, I would leave reg keeper details as is and sell vehicle with availability of 6/12 months tax to new keeper and submit the forms when the new buyer pays, thus keeping another name of the V5 for the sake of change of tax class.

You cant run it on Disabled Tax as a Trader, whether Part of Full Time (unless you have Trade Plates), you can park it up, assuming its still has tax left on or if not then on Private Property, assuming you've bought the Car using, filled in and sent off the Yellow Trade Slip, and then sell it on as 'New Owner needs to change Taxation Class' when they buy the vehicle. Thus retaining the original number owners.

If you intend to use the Car at any point on the road (apart from to and from a MOT) then there's no option than to get it re registered as normal and get some Tax on it, I had this argument before with DVLA and lost.

Problem is few people want to buy cars with no Tax, its a toss up between selling with no Tax and the new owner having to go through the Hag with DVLA, or selling with Tax and you explaining its effectively a I owner from new but you had to register it in again in order to change the Taxation Class.

I can't believe what a faff this is!!    I don't really understand why the car has to be classed anyway?  Surely it would be simpler for the car to remain PLG but if you qualify you get a free disc? Then when the car is sold on, and if the new owner dosn't qualify for a free disc, then he taxes it in the normal way??      I'll write to my MP!! 

I'd just register and tax it, but I'd like to sell it on quickly and I won't have the logbook back for 2 or three weeks!!  If I don't register and tax it I've got explain to potential buyers that the taxation class needs to be changed and they can go into the DVLA office etc etc.... 

Hmmmm! Dilemma!!!

Although the DVLA sympathized with my dilemma of have to re register the Car in may name, even though I trade, its to get around Car Tax fraud, ie, a Disabled Person buys Vehicles with free Road Tax fees and then pass's on to Family and Friends to drive around, still cant see it myself, but thats the rules.

In your shoes, if you can turn the car around in less than 2 weeks, then leave as is, if after 2 weeks its a requirement to put the Car on the MID and inform your Trade Insurance anyway, so do the 2nd owner thing.

If it is a decent car with good service history I doubt another name in the log book would put anyone off buying it .

Thanks for the replies and advice! 

I was originally planning to collect and drive the car home tomorrow, hence my attempt to tax it.  Then when I couldn't tax I organised a trailer, but that's fallen through so drive it home it is!  So it'll be a trip to the DVLA office and then on to collect. 

It'll probably be easier to sell anyway if it's ready to go, even with an extra keeper..... I'll take the approach Chris suggested, that it's still effectively had one keeper!

And all the LVLO will be closing soon, going to be some fun then, especially for the motor traders...........I need to move a personal reg soon, easy by calling in at the LVLO going to be a pain when all done by post to Swansea.....

When a disabled driver sells any car they keep the tax disc, to hand back, and will take a while to tax, as disabled a new, used car, as the class can not be changed till the log book is in their name, so they will have had to pay for tax for a month or so, as a result your new car may show as taxed on APNR, depending on how long it has been in the system. They have to have the tax disc to register their new car as only one car can be taxed for free......

That's a good tip Vamps!!!    and Yes I have thought about taking the chance.  In my younger days I wouldn't have thought twice, and would have just done it!!    However the stretch of motorway that's on my route bristles with cameras and for sure there's a ANPR camera in amongst them!!
