Phone / pda question
« on: 06 February 2012, 10:46:52 »

I have a old Orbit xda which I used on O2 a few years back.

Looking to use the thing as a 2nd phone / business phone in a few months but I can't find any of the chargers / leads.
The socket on the back of the phone looks similar to the small usb that fits into satnavs and digital cameras, but on one side it is squared off.

Does anybody on here know what this type of plug is called ?
I have looked on ebay but tbh, they just look like the type for my tomtom  :-\
I'm looking for a lead from the phone to my laptop.
That way, I can charge it up from the laptop and make sure it is working first before I shell out an buy a mains / car charger

Thanks

Sounds like the generic HTC one. Its a propeitry version of mini USB, but mini USB will work for charging and data transfer.

And I probably have a load of accessories here from when I was stupid enough to use HTC phones.

I've been trying to get the thing working with a normal mini usb for a while.

Found the instructions last night so I did a hard reset and it looks like the thing is starting to charge up ( orange light on )

I'll leave it for a day on charge and see what happens.
Hope it works out ok, not a bad phone from what I remember and its also got satnav on a memory card  :y

Looking on t'internt last night, I saw something on u tube about downloading and installing andriod on the xda.
Anybody know anything about this ?

I would suggest that trying to run a modern OS (don't bother with early Android releases) on such old hardware is going to be unsatisfactory.  Obviously, if its just for the hell of it, and you don't care if you kill it, why now :y

It's called "mini USB", since then we have moved on to what is called "micro USB" which is pretty much the de-facto standard for mobile devices these days.

I remember when the Orbit first came out, a very good bit of kit in it's time but unfortunately quite dated by todays standards due to it's limited hardware (200MHz CPU, 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM).
It is quite possible to make Android run on that spec, but as Jaime has already pointed out it's not going to be a case of just flashing a new ROM so you are probably best off leaving the default Windows Mobile OS on it.

IIRC, the SatNav software was only "free" on certain tariffs so you may find that map updates are now chargeable.
I'm guessing from your original post that it hasn't been used for a good while so there is a distinct possibility that the battery won't hold a decent charge, but that won't stop you from using an external power source.

If you do want to play around with upgrading the OS, click >HERE<

Can you get these phones unlocked and run them on another network ?
Just got the phone to start and shutdown properly so i'm just going to leave it on and let it run itself down a few times to see how the battery lasts.
I should have the satnav disc somewhere so I might have a play with it tonight.

Many benefits in upgrading the Os using that link ?

Any handset can be unlocked, but a quick Google indicates it is probably already unlocked.
With the exception of a Sony Ericsson X8, every handset I have purchased from O2 has been "SIM free" by default.

Upgrades are generally for bug fixes and improvements, but if it's doing what you want then I'd say the golden rule applies ("If it works, don't fix it").

Martian - in general, with O2, contract phones are unlocked, PAYG are locked. gayPhone being a notable exception as well.

Tiger_gonads - if its just a cheap, 2nd phone, I find GiffGaff a decent network, if you are not porting numbers in (seems they have big issues with porting). It runs on the O2 network, so no need to unlock handset.
