I wouldn't have such a problem if they applied it just to new cars or even existing cars when they next change hands (although it would hit resale values), but to apply it retrospectively to the car in your driveway is plain dishonest.

Agreed. Especially when previous changes to the banding were NOT applied retrospectively. If their motivation is the environment, they should be looking to discourage the purchase of new cars with high CO2, and the use of cars in general. (and a 1K first year road tax is not going to do that. It will probably be swallowed by the dealer as a sweetener.)

Once the car is on the road, milking it for more road tax is just taxation and can't be dressed up as concern for the environment, etc.

It's a shame the media whipped up such opposition to the rise in fuel duty, tbh, because that seems the obvious answer. Having said that, more taxation is not what this country needs. A clear indicator and some commitment as to what long term plans the government has for transport would be good, and would promote investment in the right areas. Sadly, I suspect this shower has no long term plans, other than to continue to use the motorist as their Cash Cow.

Kevin
Darling made it look like he had done the motorist a favour by delaying the 2p rise on fuel. In actual fact due to the rising price of crude oil he has already had a 9p a litre rise in fuel  duty and vat over the last 6 months or so.

Actually I don't think so. I am led to believe for emissions purposes it is actually the date of manufacture of the engine and not the year of registration of the car. I believe this was brought in some time ago primarily for kit cars and the like. And it is up to the owner to prove the year of manufacture.

Inclined to agree, it's the engine that creates the emissions so would be based on the manufacturers figures for it and it's date of manufacture I would have thought.

It's whichever is earlier, for MOT emissions, at any rate. In theory you could get a modern car and put a 1940's engine in it, claiming it's now exempt from emissions testing.

CO2 emissions aren't connected with the MOT, however, and aren't only dependant on the engine the car has. Change the weight / aerodynamics of the vehicle and the CO2 will change because it's more dependant on fuel consumption than anything else.

My Tax runs out at the end of May... If I taxed my car for six months then for 12 months via t'internet a week or so before Dec 31st I presume I would get both of those at a pre budget price?  :-/

Thoughts please....!

Yup.

We do haev such a shit government.

The bottom line is the cars already exist and now hes hiking the price. Its not going to help the environemnt one bit, it which actulay do more damage but, will line his pocket with more tax....

My conclusion, its another stealth tax and I suspect it will spread to earlier cars in the next few years.

New rates effective in March each year so if my tax weren 't already up in January I'd be shifting it to that time of year.  :y

I usually miss the increase with my Westfield which runs out 1st April, but they put them up on the 13th this year, and you can only apply for tax from the 15th day of the preceding month.  >:(

We must be able to stop this theft, time for a revolution????
We had a chance last election, and nobody would do anything.

In these lean years, taxes need to rise (less corporate tax, which is the big earner).  With the way the media are trying to go all green and anti 4x4 (despite most modern 4x4s being no worse than many similar sized cars), non Prius and non G-Whizz drivers will get hit hard.

Well I cleaned the breathers today so that's got to be a couple of quid off! .....even though they were virtually spotless anyway!

Think I'll be doing that with my tax then.... just be a bugger landing between Christmas and New Year, Post offices will be full of people before Christmas and no doubt if I do it on-line it'll be stuck in a sorting office until the new year...  :-/

Sadly it's cars registered on or after 1st March 2001 so you're just after the crucial date.  :'(

Time to buy shares in Vaseline and K-Y, I'd say. They're going to be raking it in come 2009. ;D
