Had to take my missuz to hospital today "not very well at all" anyway on the way back just for a kick in the teeth the car decided to shoot the temp gauge straight into the red zone , luckily enough i wasn't far from home so got it back without to much trouble . I have checked every hose/HBV/rad and cant see how its overheating ... the drivers side engine bay is wet around the header tank and the car has lost only half a cup of water 
I have ran the car on tickover for over half an hour and it wont overheat , just seems when the car is driven it wont keep cool ...no oil in water or water in oil ...correct antifreeze was used from vx 

Any ideas .

could it have been an air lock?
if you want me to pop over for a 2nd opinion let me know

If its wet around the drivers side by the header tank could well have built up pressure and leaked through cap which could point to an airlock .

These things always happen at the worst time....Hope wife is ok mate

That would be great martin , just dont know why its doing it ...i noticed it was getting higher than usual on the gauge the other day then today it just boiled over .

All seems ok for now , maybe need a new header tank cap but i possibly didn't tighten the cap enough to seal properly . Will have to keep an eye on it for a while . If an air lock will this be an ongoing problem that will sort itself out or is there a way to properly expel all possible air out the system

check your thermostat.. when you start up your engine (engine cold), keep your hand on the coolant hose that goes to the rad.. if it warms up slowly , you need a new thermostat, but if you feel a sudden heat flow , your thermostat is ok..

now seen , yours is 97..  when you have spare time, like a sunday, disconnect the rad from the engine and try some rad cleaners (lime dissolver style) , wait some time and use lots of water from a hose.. you will be shocked
 
ps: weekly check your engine for coolant loss.. just in case..

An Omega will self vent/bleed air from the system, but helping it doesn't do any harm.

Ok i have a few things to try .

Heat on full , cap off and burp system.

Check hoses for temp and how fast they get hot .

Will try this and let you know how it goes ...many thanks peeps 

Its a new rad cem  but if i get no joy from the above im going to take the rad off anyway and dig deeper

It might be the fan switch or relay for the main fan, so only the auxiliary fan works. Engine, will go into the red and then cool down due to the auxiliary fan pushing air through the radiator

I'm sure somebody on here will know at what temperatures the fans switch on.

That could be a possibilty , i only heard the fans cut in yesterday when it had run into the red ....
I have topped the coolant up then screwed the filler cap on more secure than it was , the temp sits at 95 but no fans are cutting in ...i noticed the gauge rises a bit more when the car is turned off but then as soon as its driven it settles back to 95 .

Squeezed all the pipes with cap off and the stat appears to working correctly.
Where is the fan switch or relay thingy  easy to get to 

What temp should the fans cut in normally , im thinking that all is fine but when it gets to a point of too much heat and needs the assitance of the cooling fans its just boiling over
