Guaging interest for a Scottish meet
« on: 19 February 2012, 19:52:41 »

Yes yes, I know its in the wrong section but I will post it here initially so as to guage interest as its the most read section and thereafter plan accordingly.   :P

A Scottish Grand Meet has been talked about previously but nothing much ever came of it.  Indeed, Jockular Omega meets are somewhat of a joke to some on here that they require oodles of server space to talk about and plan and never come to fruition!

The following is a potential location for a weekend away with *limited* space for work to be done on cars.  Its warm and dry, indoors, and remote enough that we can make noise such that we do not disturb the neighbours (within reason) with showers, running water and electricity.  Cost at this time, unknown but wont be outrageous.

There is also the possibility of a glorified large size double garage type wooden building about 75 yards away from Scott Lodge, property of the Air Training Corps, which is basically a wooden tent.  No electricity.  No gas.  Crap in a can.  Wash in the river.  Cook what you bring on your own stoves.  Tents are OK but ground can be wet.  No caravans.  But its cheap and would cost a donation plus a couple of bottles of Scotch.  Sleeps about 20 at a push but its all in sleeping.  No special accomodations for the ladies or kids.

Scott Lodge is at the head of Glen Doll and is perhaps the closest most folks on here will come to being in the great outdoors and somewhere really quite remote.  There is a public payphone on the premises and NO mobile reception.  Unless you climb a hill.  Even then, its doubtfull, TBH.  When it gets dark, its black dark and no light pollution and great for star gazing.  Some really good walks through the hills and a couple of Munroes for those who want to really stretch their legs.

Theres a hotel a few miles away with good accomodation, cooked food, draught beers and local ales and a bunkhouse for those who do not want to slum it but its still on the backside of nowhere - but with cracking scenery.

Discuss?

Well if the dates are right for me, whenever it will be, then I am most definately up for it. Right on my doorstep when visiting the rellies in Letham (Forfar).

Working offshore, but visit Scotland every other month.

No dates fixed as yet, just looking for intent at the moment.  Would need to get some sort of general concensus of dates before looking for availability.  Scott Lodge, being a BB property, will probably be booked well in advance for school hols , TBH.

To clarify, there is no availability for undercover working on cars.  Any reference to 'indoors' or similar refers to accomodation only.  Car work is very much outdoors and on loose surface/compacted gravel......

Thats a shame, as if it was linked with school hols (English ones that is!!) I'd consider dropping of SWTSMBO to visit her mum in Elgin and drop by with a sleeping bag for a wee dram or three .... Unless combined with such a visit it is not viable for this sassenach .....   :)

Could be tempted for the Scott Lodge idea.....Put us in the hat for one of the separate rooms...
The Dorm 'would do'
The family don't fancy 'the hut' though.  I may.

If you search in google maps for Braedownie you can get a street view of the area.  Ignore the part marked Boys Brigade as thats actually the ranger station.   ;D

The BB Building is just north of Braedownie farm, in a clearing to the west of the road northwards towards the bridge and the carpark, accessed by the wooden gates to the west of the access road.  Easily seen on google earth, if you use the wo programmes combined.

Area very reminiscent of the Lakes for scenery and such.  Just dont expect a supermarket or even a shop nearby.....   :)

Quick TB, upgrade the server! The "Scottish Meet" Thread is in the meetings section :D :D :D

In all seriousness, it's a cracking idea and I'd love to be able to support it. It's unlikely though as I'm still getting things sorted WRT work. Good luck with it and I hope it comes off :y :y

TB is currently sat, bored witless, in a datacentre "up north", wonderly if the disks and RAM in these Proliants would fit OOF's Proliant...
