Omega General Help / Re: backbox
« on: 10 April 2017, 06:21:28 »
looks like the alu heat shield between the box and the spare tyre well has been removed is that wise?

The heat shields on modern cars past the downpipe/manifold are useless and serve no purpose except to collect crap in them.

When i took the engine out of my 1994 2.5 V6 it took most of a day to get the engine out. If a good replacement engine had been available then it would have been in that day and all plugged in and ready to drive after a second day.

Messing around swapping ECUs, locks, immobilisers, seats and other stuff will take a lot longer than an engine swap..........

Yeah it would be better in every way to swap the engine but I'm a bit worried if I can get to all the transmission bolts etc while doing it on the ground without taking everything off the engine first.
For example BMW tranny swap is super easy if I have a lift to work on but I'm not sure if I could even get it off on the ground.

I probably have another Omega to salvage parts from soon and as my own car doesn't have a key or remote on it, am I correct that I need ECU, transponder and keys from the spare car to plug in on my own to be able to use the remote locking from it?

Both are MV6, one is 1996 and other is 1997. The spare just has lots of nice extras like leather interior, heated rear seats, sun roof etc...
Should just swap the engine from mine to that really if I had the time for it...

Omega General Help / Re: 3.2 vs 3.0 timing kit difference?
« on: 09 April 2017, 18:41:51 »
There were some differences in the pulley layout and eventually the lower adjustable pulley was replaced by a fixed one on the later 3.2s and 2.6s.

The differences are all taken up in changes to the ali mounting casting that holds the upper idler and tensioner pulleys, and the bottom idler pulley which may or may not be adjustable so you can fit any kit to any V6 provided:

You re-use your existing ali casting if the one in the kit is not the same.
You accept that you might end up with an adjustable lower pulley when you didn't have one before.

If looking for a 3.2 kit, it's certainly worth buying an earlier kit instead, as they are significantly cheaper.

Thank you!

Out of curiosity, why do the timing kits come with that new mount casting?

EDIT: I had a look at the pics and it seems the newer kit has the static lower pulley while the old kit has adjustable lower pulley like you said and the casting seems to have small differences in the looks atleast.

Omega General Help / 3.2 vs 3.0 timing kit difference?
« on: 09 April 2017, 17:01:30 »
I remember reading that the parts fit on either engine but why are they sold as different when the physical engine is pretty much the same on the outside apart from lower guide pulley?

There is a big difference in price here for 3.0 vs 3.2.

Also they seem to ask for engine number for different kits but again, why? What is so different about them?

Should the inner gear on the oil pump be snuck to the crankshaft or?

Apologies I read your post that you had stripped everything from underneath :-[

The alternator bolt was attached to the pump itself, that is the one I missed.

Strip the front cover off and try again...

Well yeah that was kinda obvious cause it's like the first thing you need to do really.

But anyway pump is off now, the gears seem fine, there is a small play on the bigger gear sideways, maybe like 0.5mm but can measure it better tomorrow with feeler gauge...
Only thing that comes to mind now is that there is something blocking the oil path to the filter? The oil goes straight from the pump to the filter first right?

There was lots of sealant on the parts gushing out from previous install so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some gunk in the passage...

Anyone got any info on how the oil pump comes off?

I removed the crank gear, all the bolts from the front of the engine, oil pan, 5 bolts inside the oil pan that looked like they might attach to it and the oil sump but it doesn't seem to budge? Anything I'm missing?

Omega General Help / Re: Low speed wobble
« on: 05 April 2017, 11:15:05 »
Yes it can be a damaged tire, maybe not even visible to the eye. I had exact same symptoms with low speed wobble but nothing at higher speeds and it was worst when accelerating from stand still.
One of the rear tires had some damage.

So you checked the mesh in the end of the pickup pipe?

Yes and took the pickup pipe off now and nothing wrong that the eye can see, seal is fine on the top and stuff and it's all clean inside.

How hard is the oil pump to take off?

You say you checked the sump, did you also check he oil pickup?

What do you mean? The sump is on the bottom end of the pickup right? Is there something else I need to check about it?
Can there be a leak in the pickup that it only sucks air to the oil pump or something?

What I mean is I didn't take the pickup off, only inspected the sump and checked that it wasn't clogged under the car.

The valve seems to move just fine when I press on it so I think that rules it out?

How frickin tight is that pressure relief valve bolt???

Oil sump was clean as ever...

Can the pressure relief valve really cause that even oil filter doesnt get filled with oil? Or is it really "never happens" broken oil pump? The oil pan was free of any  metals atleast so maybe there is still hope if/when I find the oil preasure.
