General Discussion Area / Guaging interest for a Scottish meet
« on: 19 February 2012, 19:52:41 »
Yes yes, I know its in the wrong section but I will post it here initially so as to guage interest as its the most read section and thereafter plan accordingly.   :P

A Scottish Grand Meet has been talked about previously but nothing much ever came of it.  Indeed, Jockular Omega meets are somewhat of a joke to some on here that they require oodles of server space to talk about and plan and never come to fruition!

The following is a potential location for a weekend away with *limited* space for work to be done on cars.  Its warm and dry, indoors, and remote enough that we can make noise such that we do not disturb the neighbours (within reason) with showers, running water and electricity.  Cost at this time, unknown but wont be outrageous.

There is also the possibility of a glorified large size double garage type wooden building about 75 yards away from Scott Lodge, property of the Air Training Corps, which is basically a wooden tent.  No electricity.  No gas.  Crap in a can.  Wash in the river.  Cook what you bring on your own stoves.  Tents are OK but ground can be wet.  No caravans.  But its cheap and would cost a donation plus a couple of bottles of Scotch.  Sleeps about 20 at a push but its all in sleeping.  No special accomodations for the ladies or kids.

Scott Lodge is at the head of Glen Doll and is perhaps the closest most folks on here will come to being in the great outdoors and somewhere really quite remote.  There is a public payphone on the premises and NO mobile reception.  Unless you climb a hill.  Even then, its doubtfull, TBH.  When it gets dark, its black dark and no light pollution and great for star gazing.  Some really good walks through the hills and a couple of Munroes for those who want to really stretch their legs.

Theres a hotel a few miles away with good accomodation, cooked food, draught beers and local ales and a bunkhouse for those who do not want to slum it but its still on the backside of nowhere - but with cracking scenery.

Discuss?

General Discussion Area / speeding type question
« on: 31 January 2012, 18:44:32 »
This might sound a little off kilter, given my previous vocation, but I've been intrigued for the past couple of hours since it happened.

I delivered a car today up into Glenlivit country - in fact, the farm was directly opposite the distillery and easily visible.  I got a lift down the road by a chap in a Range Rover back down the A9 via Aviemore, Dalwhinnie, Blair Atholl etc etc.  Anyone who knows this road understands that its a beautiful run but a road with sweeping bends, limited views and good dual carriageway, all in variable proportions.  And a bad reputation for road safety and subsequent carnage.

We had been chugging along behind a whisky tanker and in queue of traffic when a clear stretch emerges and the driver goes out for an overtake in a single carriageway section with a 60 limit for cars.  The fella floors it and in a jiff, we are upto 90 and pulling back in past the traffic and loosing speed on deceleration.  I spot two figures a good 6 or 7 hundred yards away on the verge on the opposite carriageway and mentioned about it being a strange place to catch a bus.  As we get closer, still loosing speed down to the 60 limit, we see that its a pair of trafpol minus high viz jackets and their patrol car up a farm track.  Strange, not understood part, now follows.

One of them was using a device no larger than a palm sized video recorder and tucked it out of sight as we were almost upon him.  He had obviously been filming/reading/monitoring our progress.  Both of us watched in the rear mirrors and there was no attempt to get into the patrol car and catch us up as I fully expected to happen.  No subsequent stop by any other trafpol a mile or so down the road as would have easily happened in my day.

It was not a prolaser or a hand held radar of any type known to me but to all intents and purposes, a small palm sized video camera.

Anyone any experience of similar?  The manouever was nothing outrageous or drastic, just a simple out for a confirmed look, boot it and back in again on the overrun type overtake.

And no, all you cynics, it wasn't me in the drivers seat - but was quite amused at the drivers actions thereafter and the subsequent q&a session that followed!

edit for spill chucker korrektions

Whats the root food cause?

Had the remains of last nights sausage and duck cassulet dinner reheated for lunch today.

Dug out a couple of steaks from the bottom of the freezer with fresh vegs for dinner tonight and - cor, fek, begger me - it don't half stink now, some 4 hours after the vent.

Even the hound has retreated!

Whats you'r trigger!   :-*
