Thank you for that..  :)

I'll look at the DVD again and try to have a go at it this weekend.. I don't think I'll do too much damage by just doing what you have suggested.. fingers crossed for a good result!!

... then look at the marks on all 4 wheels to make sure they are close to the marks on the casing? Or do you just look at left hand bank?

I understand where you're coming from.. If someone abuses a helping hand then it screws it up for all decent people afterwards!!!   >:( >:(

Aux is off (shredded). Engine runs but very noisy. I don't fancy paying for belt and tensioner and risk driving it anywhere as it is..

If I strip it further (i.e. take cam belt cover off) is it easy to tell how far the alignment is out??

Omega General Help / Cam Lock Kit

Hi all..

My MV6 shredded its auxiliary belt before xmas and the cam belt possibly jumped some teeth.. I'd like to check alignment before scrapping but can't get anyone who's prepared to look at it. I've bought the DVD from this site and may able to persuade someone to have a go if I can find a locking kit..

Please could someone let me know who would be willing to lend/rent/give/borrow/beg - (but absolutely not steal!) a cam locking kit for a 1999 3.0 MV6.

I have tried to PM without success - but I'm probably not doing this right!!

Many thanks to you all..

The marks aren't really needed tbh, just takes a couple more attempts.

The contitech kits seem to be liked here, if you can get the right type for yours

Where's the best (cheapest) place to get these?

First thing is to see how far its slipped. 3 teeth, you may be lucky. 4, oh dear.

.. looks like I might have to try this myself ....

"aaahhhhh nooooo!!" - you hear my car scream "you know nothing about me". "please don't touch me!!"

I'm going to order the DVD, and try to source the tools... could anyone tell me where I can rent the locking kit??

If I strip the cover off the belt can I see how many teeth the belt has slipped, or is it more complicated than that??

Is this a very silly thing I'm trying to do???  - or is it just a bonding process that every owner needs to go through??

NICK

I had the cam belt slip on my Omega which resulted in a lot of mechanical noise, still ran ok though, no warning lights and it idled fine, just really really noisy, had the belt and tensioners replaced and it was fine.

its a gamble but before scrapping it I would think about changing the belts and tensioners, make sure its all timed up properly and if your lucky it'll be ok :y

Thanks for that good news Colalowe..   :)

Maybe it would be possible to realign the existing belt before the expense of the kit??

Now I need to find someone who is willing to look at it!!

Sounds like the cam belt tensioner is in fail mode to me....

All was very quiet before shredding..

There was much shredding of Aux Belt!! He thinks debris got into cam belt and caused teeth to jump?? Of course it's possible for the Cam Tensioner to be faulty now as well!!

I recently posted about an Aux Belt that shredded...

Firstly can I thank the many of you that read the post and to those of you who kindly replied..

If you're reading this for the first time let me recap (sorry to those who've heard this before) :

MV6 3.0l auto, traveling at about 30/40, loss of steering etc,etc stopped immediately. Aux belt tensioner failed - shredding Aux Belt!
Towed to nearby garage (good chap - but no knowledge of Omegas).

Engine runs (without Aux Belt) but with mechanical noise from the engine. Cam belt is intact but he suspects it may have jumped teeth. (suspects the worst??)

I'm reluctant to loose this vehicle as it's in good condition and I've started to change bits and pieces like exhausts and discs etc. It's only done 84K, cam belt was changed at 47k and is due shortly, but otherwise ok!

The purpose of this post is to ask the many of you out there who have so much knowledge of these things : "What do I do next??"

Do I just suspect the worst and scrap it?
I have asked and can't find a local specialist for Omegas.
I can't afford Main dealer prices this side of Xmas!!

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to lend a helping hand? Even if it was just to come and have a look and tell me the bad news!! In the last resort I could possibly arrange a trailer and bring it somewhere...

The vehicle is in SE Wales just north of Newport - easy access from M4 or M50..

.. but please.. could one of you help??

NICK

The 'Kit' part is the belt and tensioners, similar to this .[/quote]

Is this a recommended purchase or should I only consider Vauxhall Genuine Parts?

Nick - from another post - Shredded Aux Belt + Cam teeth slipped??

Remove the aux belt and start-up to check if the noise is from water pump / power steering / aircon / alternator. (dont run it for too long, there wont be any coolant circulating)
If noise is still present then its likely that part of the old belt did between the camcover and the backplate and has caused the cambelt to slip some teeth, valve damage is a distinct possibility, seen it before unfortunately.  :'(

Hi James...

Thank you for this.. If you can come could you let me know?

Engine has been started and run for a very brief time without Aux belt and the noise sounds like it's from the engine.. The car is currently without the aux belt as it isn't worth a new one till I know for sure what's wrong.

The cam belt was last changed at 47k so is due anyway.

I would love someone who knows Omegas (except main dealers that is) to look at this and diagnose..

The cam belt is in place and not broken but may have jumped teeth? Is it difficult/possible to realign the old cam belt and listen to the engine before forking out for new parts?

The car is in Cwmbran (Monmouthshire) area and I would be very grateful to anyone who could come to look at this. (There is a small possibility to put it on a trailer and transport - if this would help?)

Thank you all..

NICK

I would not be driving this until you are totally certain. When was the cambelt KIT last changed - within the last 40k miles?  If so, it's probably due anyway.

I do offer a cambelt changing service for the V6, and I regularly travel through monmouth/chepstow/south wales, however, very stretched at the minute, and you would become number three in the queue :)

Whoever does the work, make sure they use the appropriate locking kit!

Cheers
James
